The role of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police during the Indian Residential School system by Marcel-Eugène LeBeuf( )

4 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 70 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report is the first complete assessment of the relationship between the RCMP and the IRS system. The focus of the research was to explain how police officers were linked to the IRS system and what actions the police took, if any, if they were aware of abuse. Although the research found that the RCMP was not an active participant in the IRS system, it did conclude that the RCMP assumed a responsive, law enforcement role within the system. The RCMP's role included: - searching for and returning truant children; - finding parents who refused to send their children to school and informing them of their obligations to do so under The Indian Act; - providing transportation to schools; and - occasionally conducting investigations at the schools, primarily related to fires or missing children."--R.C.M.P. news release

Inequality before the law : the Canadian experience of "racial profiling" by Ronald-Frans Melchers( )

3 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most people experience contacts with police at some time. Few experience these as a diminishment of their rights to privacy, even when it ultimately is determined that there was no cause for police attention, and the vast majority of such contacts end peacefully without serious consequence. Nonetheless, even benign contacts often leave people wondering for what reasons they were singled out. For individuals who feel visible traits such as skin colour, age, clothing or non-legally relevant behaviours make them more subject to unwanted -- and in their minds unwarranted -- attention from police, it can be experienced as a violation. This sense of violation in itself can further result in an escalation of response

Youth online and at risk : radicalization facilitated by the Internet( )

2 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 57 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

More than ever, the lives of young Canadians are lived online. The World Wide Web is used by children, pre-teens, and teens for research, learning, entertainment, social networking, and to just pass the time. The widespread use of the web is facilitated by the fact that computers are readily accessible in classrooms, libraries, and bedrooms of youth while web-enabled cell phones-- fast becoming the norm-- provide access everywhere in between. In fact, a comprehensive Canadian study on the online habits of youth found that internet "access is almost universal." However, just because young people have near constant access to the web, it cannot be assumed that they are fully aware of the risks posed by being online
