Logistic regression : a primer by Fred C Pampel( Book )

25 editions published between 2000 and 2010 in English and held by 554 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Pampel's book offers readers the first "nuts and bolts" approach to doing logistic regression through the use of careful explanations and worked out examples. Pampel first offers readers a review of some basic concepts, such as exponents, percentage change, and likelihood functions. Next, he describes in some detail how taking the log of the odds eliminates the floor so that the transformation of logistic regression coefficients into coefficients that effect odds and probabilities makes more sense to readers. And, third, he describes maximum likelihood estimation through words and simple samples (along side of the formulas) so as to make the concept more concrete and the procedure easier to comprehend. Throughout the book, he emphasizes examples, explanations, and how to interpret the results of each procedure. This book will enable readers to use and understand logistic regression techniques and will serve as a foundation for more advanced treatments of the topic."--Pub. desc

Disaster response by Fred C Pampel( Book )

4 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is impossible to avoid the constant media barrage of reports detailing human-made and natural disasters and amplifying the threat of such disasters. Beyond the news headlines, recent disasters have prompted the restructuring of the U.S. government, namely, the formation of the Department of Homeland Security and the reorganization of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). With the ever-present prospect of disaster from hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, floods, wildfires, landslides, drought, winter storms, nuclear accidents, terrorist attacks, and chemical contamination, the role of government in protecting the population seems more important than ever. Disaster Response provides an overview of the history of the topic and issues surrounding it, ranging from natural disasters, such as Hurricane Katrina, to terrorist attacks, such as those that occurred on September 11, 2001. Documents such as Disaster Assistance Available from FEMA and contemporary court cases such as Lyng, Secretary of Agriculture, et al. v. Payne, et al. are included. These and other documents provide multiple perspectives and decisions surrounding this issue while also plotting a course for the future of disaster response."--Jacket
Rights of the elderly by Fred C Pampel( Book )

3 editions published in 2008 in English and held by 313 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Publisher: Each volume of the Facts On File Library in a Book series is carefully designed to be a first-stop research source on important current issues. Written clearly and carefully so that even the most complex aspects of the topic are easily understandable, the books give the reader the essential information to begin work, plus the research tools needed to delve more deeply into the issues. Each book includes a history of the subject, biographical information on important figures in the field, a complete annotated bibliography, and a carefully designed index-everything the researcher needs to get down to work. The elderly have traditionally been a segment of the population treated with respect and veneration. Numerous societal changes, however, have raised practical concerns about how to best care for an aging population without overburdening younger and future generations. Necessities that many take for granted-employment, medical care, and housing-are often difficult for the elderly to obtain. Government programs such as Social Security and Medicare are constantly threatened by privatization. As baby boomers continue to retire, questions surrounding the rights of the elderly become more and more pronounced. Rights of the Elderly provides an overview of the history of this timely topic and opinions surrounding it, ranging from the Social Security Act of 1935 to the current activism of groups such as AARP and the Gray Panthers. Examining contemporary case studies such as Kathi Cooper, et al. v. IBM Personal Pension Plan and IBM Corporation and documents such as The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, this new volume provides multiple perspectives and decisions surrounding this increasingly important issue while also projecting a course for the future of the rights of the elderly

Fred C. Pampel describes how age combines with other components of inequality by comparing the influence of group membership on social inequality before and after the life course transition to old age. He looks at the differences in public policy and how age inequality -- more than the other sources of inequality -- relates closely to government policies and studies other societies in which both age group differences and overall inequality differ from those in the United States. Pampel makes a comparison of the United States with other nations a central component of the book
