The American occupational structure by Peter M Blau( Book )

33 editions published between 1967 and 1978 in English and held by 1,262 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The objective of this book is to present a systematic analysis of the American occupational structure, and, thus, of the major foundation of the stratification system in this society. Processes of social mobility from one generation to the next and from career beginnings to occupational destinations are considered to reflect the dynamics of the occupational structure. By analyzing the patterns of these occupational movements, the conditions that affect them, and some of their consequences, one attempts to explain part of the dynamics of the stratification system in the United States. The inquiry is based on a considerable amount of empirical data collected from a representative sample of over 20,000 American men between the ages of 20 and 64. The survey of "Occupational Changes in a Generation" was carried out as an adjunct to the monthly "Current Population Survey" of the Bureau of the Census. The analysis of the data collected in the survey constitutes the bulk of the material reported in the present book, although occasionally other sources are drawn on as well. As the comparative data from a variety of societies needed for refining the theory of stratification are not available in this study, it has been supplemented with data from mobility surveys of other countries. The material in first seven chapters is almost entirely standard, with the remaining four introducing progressively more open-ended issues, seducing the reader into beginning to think for himself about the properties of models or even to suggest problems that may intrigue the advanced student

Notes on social measurement : historical and critical by Otis Dudley Duncan( Book )

12 editions published in 1984 in English and Undetermined and held by 577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Social measurement, like physical measurement, is a persistent theme in human history. In this essay, an eminent sociologist suggests that social measurement has its roots in the social process itself, broadly conceived, and not specifically in the scientific method as it developed in the seventeenth and later centuries

These data were collected to study the effect of men's backgrounds on their careers. The 1962 and 1973 surveys (Parts 1 and 2) were intended to supplement the March Current Population Surveys conducted by the Census Bureau. The Replicate Data file (Part 3) is a recoded subset of the common variables from the 1962 and 1973 fichiers. This file was designed to facilitate carrying out comparative analyses of the 1962 and 1973 data. Variables include respondent's age, employment history, military service (1973 only), marital history, ethnicity, income, education, and (in 1962 only) number of children. Also included is information about educational attainment and occupation of the head of the household in which the respondent lived at age 16, intact family, mother's educational attainment (1973 only), number of siblings, and educational attainment of the respondent's oldest and (in 1973 only) youngest brother. Similar data on education, current occupation, and income are available for wives of respondents, but social background data for wives are limited to father's occupation, father's education, number of siblings, and mother's education (1973 only) ... Detroit Area Study, 1971: Social Problems and Social Change in Detroit by Otis Dudley Duncan( )

5 editions published between 1984 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The study was conducted during the spring and summer of 1971. The aim of the 1971 Detroit Area Study was to gather information on social change in the Detroit area by replicating items from nine earlier Detroit Area Studies that were conducted in 1953-1959, 1968, and 1969. The criteria used for selecting the question items were that they: (1) not be dated by wording or subject matter, (2) be relevant to some problem of current public concern or a continuing issue of sociological theory, and (3) be of the type that would be manageable in a long interview on diverse subjects. The questions chosen to be included in the 1971 Detroit Area Study examined issues such as values in marriage, ideal number of children, satisfaction of wives with marriage, decision-making and division of labor within a marriage, attitudes toward women and work, child-rearing, social participation, religious participation and beliefs, moral and job values, political orientation and participation, evaluation of various institutions, and racial attitudes. In addition to the items replicated from the previous studies, respondents' attitudes toward the United States sending troops to Vietnam were explored. Background variables established respondents' age, sex, race, educational level, marital status, occupation, class identification, and relationship to head of household. Demographic information was also collected on the respondent's spouse and parents
