Vasily Kandinsky : a colorful life : the collection of the Lenbachhaus, Munich by Vivian Endicott Barnett( Book )

14 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and Undetermined and held by 770 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Born in Russia, Vasily Kandinsky (1866-1944) was one of the most original and influential artists to emerge in the twentieth century. He is known primarily for his daring use of color in startling non-objective works. Vasily Kandinsky: A Colorful Life is the most comprehensive and fully illustrated account to date of his early work, from 1900 to 1914, the period in which he made his radical shift to abstraction - and in so doing altered the very concept of art itself. The works presented here are from the collection of the city museum of Munich, or Stadtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus. They were given to the Galerie in 1957 by the artist Gabriele Munter, who was Kandinsky's companion from 1903 to the beginning of World War I. They are being shown at the Galerie in their entirety for the first time in a major exhibition, for which this book serves as the catalogue. In compelling, readable text that draws on the latest research, noted Kandinsky expert Vivian Endicott Barnett illuminates the life and work of the artist. She begins with sketches made during his student years in Munich and considers also his interest in folk art, myths and fairy tales, the small oil studies from nature, medieval scenes, woodcuts, glass paintings and landscapes he made before progressing to the first abstractions. Included as well are the important paintings from the series of Improvisations, Impressions, and Compositions, which are among the highlights of his involvement with the Blue Rider group, and later works from his Bauhaus and Paris years. This sumptuous book includes more than 700 examples of Kandinsky's early genius, most of them brilliantly reproduced in full color. The works are organized chronologically, and paintings are accompanied, when relevant, by preliminary sketches and prints."--Jacket

Atlas by Gerhard Richter( Book )

42 editions published between 2006 and 2011 in English and German and held by 500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This monumental publication maps the ideas, processes, life and times of one of the most important painters of the late twentieth century. Having left East Germany in 1961, where he had already established a reputation as a Realist painter, Gerhard Richter went on to attend the Dusseldorf Academy, striking out on a radical new path and changing the history of painting as he looked to photography for a way to release painting from the political and symbolic burdens of Socialist Realism and Abstract Expressionism." "Conceived and closely edited by Gerhard Richter himself, Atlas cuts straight to the heart of the artist's work, presenting the photographs, drawings and sketches that he has compiled or created since the moment of his creative breakthrough in 1962. From pictures of family and friends to images from the mass media, Richter's photographs - sometimes found, sometimes original - have provided the basis for many of his paintings, often re-emerging in a luminous, monochromatic palette, and falling ambiguously between documentary and historical painting. The images closely parallel, year by year, the subjects of Richter's paintings, revealing the orderly but open-ended analysis that has been so central to his art. Offering invaluable insight into Richter's working process, this monumental new edition, which completely revises and updates the rare, out-of-print 1997 edition, features 783 multi-image sheets, each reproduced full page and in full color."--Jacket

Mondrian, De Stijl by Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus München( Book )

10 editions published in 2011 in German and Multiple languages and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the exception of the Bauhaus, probably no other art movement of the first half of the twentieth century has had such an influence on our everyday lives as the De Stijl group around Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. Mondrian, along with Wassily Kandinsky and Kasimir Malevich one of abstract painting's founding fathers, created strictly geometrical paintings that today are icons of modernism. Their characteristic structure - a black frame with fields of primary colours and white - has long assumed a life of its own in art and fashion, advertising and popular culture. One focus of the publication ... is Mondrian's development towards abstraction - from his early works in the circle of the neo-impressionist luminists to his neoplasticistic period. A second focus is De Stijl's interdisciplinary approach, which will be shown with historical furniture, clothes, architectural drawings and models."--Jacket

"Active in Germany in the years leading up to World War I, the Blue Rider was a collective of artists, cofounded by Wassily Kandinsky, that was a key influence on Expressionism. This volume offers a highly illustrated tour through the large collection of watercolors, drawings, and prints from the group that are held by the Lenbachhaus Munich. It offers more than 230 full-color reproductions, many of which appear here for the first time in book form, and accompanying essays situate the work and the group in the context of the artistic world of their time. Mit dem Auge des Kindes : Kinderzeichnung und moderne Kunst by Jonathan David Fineberg( Book )

20 editions published in 1995 in German and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
