The European administrative elite by John A Armstrong( Book )

22 editions published between 1973 and 2016 in English and Spanish and held by 1,655 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Although there have been other studies of elite administrators in France, Great Britain, Germany, and Russia, John Armstrong has made the first systematic comparison of their roles, especially their inclination to participate in economic development. Drawing on role theory and theories of socialization and recruitment, he analyzes the influences that family, secondary school, specialized university instruction, and in-service experiences have had on administrators. Currents of ideas, class concepts of appropriate role behavior, and organizational peculiarities are also examined as possible influences. By exploring this subject over a long period--in some cases reaching as far back as the seventeenth century--this book shows how changing definitions of administrators' roles reflect their position in society and permit the exploration of changing socialization processes. The long time span also shows how factors such as administrative intervention can change from being marginally important to crucial in affecting economic growth. From the diverse European experience the author distills five factors which he hypothesizes have exerted a constant positive influence on administrative intervention in economic development, and suggests how these factors might be applied in analysis of other societies. He also provides a wealth of statistical data and an extensive bibliography. Originally published in 1973. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Escape from Auschwitz by Andreĭ Pogozhev( Book )

2 editions published in 2007 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The most notorious prison installation in the Nazi network, Auschwitz, was liberated by Red Army troops on January 27, 1945. They found a vast complex with only a few emaciated survivors, 60,000 others having been marched west by the Germans just before their arrival. In the camp the Soviet troops found evidence of unspeakable, factory-type murder, including warehouses of human hair, civilian clothing, and gold tooth-fillings. Ever since, the true story of Auschwitz has been left to the camp's survivors to tell, though these have been few. This book is the remarkable memoir of a Red Army soldier who was imprisoned at Auschwitz, undergoing the daily brutality of the camp as it assumed its sinister shape in the countryside of Poland, yet who escaped the horrors to fully recount his experience. Andrei Pogozhev had been hastily mustered into the Red Army in order to stand before Moscow to resist the German onslaught in 1941. In a confused action, his unit was surrounded by the enemy and forced into captivity. Withstanding harsh treatment and near-starvation, he and other Soviet prisoners finally found themselves in the vast camp marked by the entrance sign, 'Arbeit Macht Frei' ... This recollection of Auschwitz, with its vast detail on prisoners and guards alike, is as vivid an account of the internal workings of the death-camp as we are likely to see from the diminishing number of people who survived"--Publisher
