Die unglückliche Liebe von Hector Berlioz zu einer Schauspielerin führte in nur 2 Monaten 1830 zur Komposition seiner Symphony fantastique. Mit dieser revolutionären Neuorientierung der Form schuf Berlioz die Grundlage für das Genre der sinfonischen Dichtung, die im Lauf des 19. Jahrhunderts viele Meisterwerke hervorbrachte. Gekoppelt ist die Fantastische Sinfonie mit der viel gespielten, temperamentvollen Ouvertüre Römischer Karneval aus der Oper Benvenuto Cellini.
