Guilty robots, happy dogs : the question of alien minds by David McFarland( Book )

15 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and Undetermined and held by 335 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"When we interact with animals, we intuitively read thoughts and feelings into their expressions and actions. It is easy--often irresistible--to suppose that they have minds like ours. And as technology grows more sophisticated, we might soon find ourselves interpreting the behavior even of robots in human terms. But is our natural tendency to humanize other beings philosophically or scientifically justifiable? Can we ever know what non-human minds are really like? How different are human minds from the minds of animals or robots? In Guilty Robots and Happy Dogs, David McFarland offers an accessible exploration of these and many other intriguing questions, questions that illuminate our understanding the human mind and its limits in knowing and imagining other minds. In exploring these issues, McFarland looks not only at philosophy, but also examines new evidence from the science of animal behavior, plus the latest developments in robotics and artificial intelligence, to show how many different--and often quite surprising--conclusions we can draw about the nature of minds "alien" to our own. Can robots ever feel guilty? Can dogs feel happy? Answering these questions is not simply an abstract exercise but has real implications for such increasingly relevant topics as animal welfare, artificial intelligence, and cybernetics. Engagingly and accessibly written, and thought-provoking from start to finish, Guilty Robots and Happy Dogs touches on the very nature of mind and its evolution. It is essential reading for anyone curious about animal behavior, robotics, artificial intelligence, or the nature of the human mind"--Jacket

Le comportement animal : psychobiologie, éthologie et évolution by David McFarland( Book )

6 editions published between 2001 and 2014 in French and held by 186 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The complex mind : an interdisciplinary approach( Book )

10 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 18 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The dominant approach of the last century to behaviour was àssociationism' - reducing the complexity of behaviour to the homogeneous strengthening and weakening of simple connections between stimuli and responses. Chomsky's devastating critique of this account of human language in the 1960s, resulted in a cease fire with human's allowed c̀ognitive minds' with more expressive machinery, and animals resigned to the graveyard of associations. As messy as all ceasefires, this one left some animal researchers thinking associationism as bad a theory for animals as for people. But the good effect was that there was a broad appreciation that no one discipline would understand the complexities of the mind, and their origins. This book brings comparative and developmental psychology, robotics, linguistics and philosophy to bear on the problem of understanding the biological continuities and discontinuities of the human mind

The black tulip( Visual )

After the Taliban is routed from Afghanistan in early 2001, the Mansouri family seizes the new window of freedom by opening a restaurant called "The poet's corner," with an open microphone and an inviting platform for all to read poetry, perform music and tell their stories. This newfound hope proves to be fleeting as they struggle to maintain their way of life when encountering opposition from lingering factions of the Taliban. "Black Tulip" is a modern portrait of Afghanistan that captures the current plight and resilience of its people. The film was made to give voice to the voiceless people of Afghanistan by telling a story through the eyes of an everyday family from Kabul, who remain hopeful despite constant struggle and tragedy
