Venus and Adonis by John Blow( Recording )

96 editions published between 1949 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 1,101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Here we have the very first English opera, with good gossip behind it to boot: John Blow composed the work for private performance at the English court, with King Charles II's longtime mistress Moll Davis as Venus and their illegitimate 9-year-old daughter playing Cupid. Venus and Adonis isn't just a historical curiosity, though: it's a full-scale Versailles-style opera in miniature..."--Amazon.com description

7 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

John Blow was arguably London's most influential musician during the last four decades of the seventeenth-century, as highly regarded as his famous pupil Henry Purcell. Their full anthems reveal the last great flowering of the English choral tradition of Byrd and Gibbons, and the eight pieces in this anthology show a uniquely individual expressive style, with unexpected dissonances and harmonic turns. All these anthems are easy and appealing, with texts that are suitable for general-purpose liturgical use by church and cathedral choirs. The anthology also has an introduction which puts the music in its historical context
