History of psychology and psychiatry by A. A Roback( Book )

54 editions published between 1961 and 2011 in 3 languages and held by 1,094 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"While not intended as a complete history, it is hoped that the volume will serve to point out and describe the milestones in the progress of the mental sciences, in sequence. Wherever the topic lent itself to direct quotation from an author, significant passages were reproduced, so that this work is in part an anthology. In the majority of cases, primary sources were consulted, resulting in protracted labors over years. It was my purpose especially to bring out some little-known facts in the course of the development of both psychology and psychiatry"--Preface. History of American psychology by A. A Roback( Book )

The present volume is an attempt to bridge the gulf between pre-experimental and experimental epochs in America, and to fill in the gaps, to some extent, in both the too brief and the deliberately circumscribed histories of psychology. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2005 APA, all rights reserved)

"For several years I have been urged by a number of my colleagues to collect in published form selected papers from my writings and lectures on abnormal psychology and allied subjects that have been printed in medical and psychological journals during the last forty years. I have not felt inclined to yield to these sympathetic requests until this moment. What finally decided me to do so has been the recent publication of Prof. W. S. Taylor's little volume (Morton Prince and Abnormal Psychology) in which he has done me the honor of giving an exposition of my theories and a critical digest of my studies. As Professor Taylor's book is based upon my published papers, and makes constant reference to them, I have thought it would be advisable, in accordance with the requests I have received, to collect in an easily accessible and permanent form at least the more basic of them, the original papers, as well as a few unpublished lectures. I have particularly in mind the possible needs of those students, the newer generation, who may wish to re-examine the theories of the different modern "schools" of abnormal and dynamic psychology"--Preface. Destiny and motivation in language : studies in psycholinguistics and glossodynamics by A. A Roback( Book )

20 editions published between 1954 and 2012 in English and Undetermined and held by 248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The bulk of the book needs no special pleading, as its purpose is more transparent. Most of the material is built around the voco-sensory theory of language, and because the Semitic triliteral root affords us many excellent illustrations of the application of our theory, two chapters were devoted to the structure of Hebrew and kindred languages. Analyzing various phonemic combinations in the light of this theory yields us a good deal of the psychological groundwork underlying the development of both ideas and expressions. Group psychology figures prominently in the third part of the book where ethnic traits are deduced from linguistic comparisons. It is not to be understood that the ethnic group and the language it uses as a medium must be considered as inseparable. In many instances it is the divergence or deviation which counts. William James did not think it beneath him to study exceptions, when all others were rising on their toes to frame generalisations, if not actual laws"--Book. William James, his marginalia, personality and contribution by A. A Roback( Book )

14 editions published between 1942 and 2012 in English and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Based on the authors examination of William James's library, the author considers the important question of the marginalia. An attempt has been made in these pages to reinterpret some of the motives and complexes in James, as well as his attitude toward certain trends and movements. The atomistic account of his personality, as presented here, would possibly not have been relished by the protagonist of a composite approach to the study of psychological facts, but there seems to be no alternative under the circumstances. The purpose of this book is to deal with the man, and not with his ideas, except insomuch as they assist us in better understanding his personality. This volume is not even a biography, in the general sense of the word. The marginalia, dealing, as they do, with only two fields of James's activity, serve merely as samples. They afford us a glimpse of both his objective stand with regard to certain problems, in natu, and his subjective reactions to a number of men who figured in recent philosophy and psychology"--Preface. Behaviorism and psychology by A. A Roback( Book )

11 editions published between 1923 and 2011 in English and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this volume I have not attempted to include all the criticism that has been directed against behaviorism, or to refute the system in its various particulars. So much of this has already been done that it seemed sufficient merely to refer to these writings. The bibliography contains references to nearly all the articles and books that deal with special phases of behavioristic doctrine. To write a more or less exhaustive critique of behaviorism would require the publication of a voluminous work. It was rather my intention first to give a comprehensive survey of the whole behavioristic system, then to examine the validity of its basic principles, and finally to test its workability in practical life. My own position I have tried to make clear in the concluding part as well as in chapters VIII, XIII, and XIV"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Behaviorism at twenty-five by A. A Roback( Book )

13 editions published between 1937 and 2012 in English and held by 155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"It is about fifteen years now since my Behaviorism and Psychology appeared; and although an enlarged edition was to be published shortly thereafter in the International Library of Psychology under the title of The Behaviorist Movement, I thought it would be wiser to see what progress the Movement was making in the next decade before elaborating on the first book. It was not long before I could sense that the Movement was petering out, although the literature on it was growing (compare the first few months of the Technocracy craze) and it had occurred to me that in order to do full justice to all phases of behaviorism, a volume of about 700 pages would be necessary, while on the other hand, behaviorism was not worth the pains of such a time-consuming labor and financial responsibility. This year, however, marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of behaviorism. It is strange that the event had not been celebrated in objectivist circles, and that it was left to an anti-behaviorist to observe the occasion. I had then decided to honor behaviorism on my own account, and bring out a little book, containing not only added material but a full bibliography of the writings on the subject since 1923, when my Behaviorism and Psychology appeared."--Preface. The psychology of common sense; a diagnosis of modern philistinism by A. A Roback( Book )

14 editions published between 1939 and 2007 in English and held by 119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book focuses on the concept of "common sense" and is made up of articles that, while treating various topics, form a unitary whole with a single theme, namely the Leitmotif of reason. The author notes that the term "common sense" has been looked down upon as a rather loose or popular expression; however, in these pages another construction is put on the term "common sense," one that emphasizes the latter of the two words, in keeping with the investigating spirit of modern science, and corresponding to a certain phrase of the term reason, which, in its fuller denotation, comprises philosophical speculation and judgment in the ordinary conduct of life. Although the essays vary in length and style, the author considers that each of the topics covered has been fitted adequately into the framework of the common sense periscope. Not facts, so much as the method of illumination, has been concentrated upon"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)
