Mintzberg traces the origins and history of strategic planning through its prominence and subsequent fall. He argues that we must reconceive the process by which strategies are created -- by emphasizing informal learning and personal vision -- and the roles that can be played by planners. Mintzberg proposes new and unusual definitions of planning and strategy, and examines in novel and insightful ways the various models of strategic planning and the evidence of why they failed. Reviewing the so-called "pitfalls" of planning, he shows how the process itself can destroy commitment, narrow a company's vision, discourage change, and breed an atmosphere of politics. In a harsh critique of many sacred cows, he describes three basic fallacies of the process -- that discontinuities can be predicted, that strategists can be detached from the operations of the organization, and that the process of strategy-making itself can be formalized.--Publisher description
The invisible picture : a study of psychic experiences by Louisa E Rhine( Book )

8 editions published between 1980 and 2012 in English and held by 500 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Long among the foremost figures in parapsychological research, Dr. Rhine has at last provided a report on her over forty years of investigations into the apparently psychic experiences of an enormous variety of ordinary people. This magnificient book is the most comprehensive and summary study of anecdotal evidence for the existence of psychic phenomena ever published. No serious book collection on the subject, no matter how small, can lack this long-awaited title. The author discusses the numerous case histories in plain language. With the experience developed during a long career, she then is able to sort them into types--an important advance for researchers and teachers--noting such features as the form in which extrasensory information was perceived and the mental processes that seem to have been involved. Most of the chapters are devoted to specific phenomena, such as general ESP, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, precognition and contact with survivors. Dr. Rhine's findings bring to light many new human interconnections and offer a wealth of new directions for laboratory-based work. Results of her study were found to be entirely consistent with the findings of laboratory research. In addition, they give a fascinating "picture" of the psychic element in human nature that has been painted on no other canvas. An extensive list of references in appended. There are five tables and a thorough index

Publisher description: In the tradition of Margaret MacMillan's Paris 1919 comes a new consideration of Canada's most famous war and the Treaty of Ghent that unsatisfactorily concluded it, from one of this country's premier military historians. In the Canadian imagination, the War of 1812 looms large. It was a war in which British and Indian troops prevailed in almost all of the battles, in which the Americans were unable to hold any of the land they fought for, in which a young woman named Laura Secord raced over the Niagara peninsula to warn of American plans for attack (though how she knew has never been discovered), and in which Canadian troops burned down the White House. Competing American claims insist to this day that, in fact, it was they who were triumphant. But where does the truth lie? Somewhere in the middle, as is revealed in this major new reconsideration from one of Canada's master historians. Drawing on never-before-seen archival material, Zuehlke paints a vibrant picture of the war's major battles, vividly re-creating life in the trenches, the horrifying day-to-day manoeuvring on land and sea, and the dramatic negotiations in the Flemish city of Ghent that brought the war to an unsatisfactory end for both sides. By focusing on the fraught dispute in which British and American diplomats quarrelled as much amongst themselves as with their adversaries, Zuehlke conjures the compromises and backroom deals that yielded conventions resonating in relations between the United States and Canada to this very day
