Dom Casmurro : a novel by Machado de Assis( Book )

Bento Santiago or "Dom Casmurro," is a bitter, obstinate old man who narrates the story of his tragic relationship with his wife, son, and best friend
The posthumous memoirs of Brás Cubas : a novel by Machado de Assis( Book )

393 editions published between 1900 and 2015 in 17 languages and held by 1,993 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"New translation of Machado's famous novel is for the most part faithful and readable. However, work has occasional odd errors and omissions, and fails to give sufficient attention to Machado's rhythm and syntax. Given Rabassa's vast experience as a translator, it is hard not to suspect that carelessness and haste explain the mistakes and lapses. Also poorly edited and inadequately proofread"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58
Quincas Borba by Machado de Assis( Book )

271 editions published between 1896 and 2015 in 13 languages and held by 1,455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Updated translation of another Machado classic, with excellent accompanying essays, is a welcome addition to his work available in English. Rabassa provides a more informal, less strained tone than Wilson's 1954 version"--Handbook of Latin American Studies, v. 58
Esau and Jacob by Machado de Assis( Book )

22 editions published between 1965 and 2003 in English and Portuguese and held by 1,369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Esau and Jacob is the last of Machado de Assis's four great novels. At one level it is the story of twin brothers in love with the same woman and her inability to choose between them. At another level, it is the story of Brazil itself, caught between the traditional and the modern, and between the monarchical and republican ideals. Instead of a heroic biblical fable, Machado de Assis gives us a story of the petty squabbles, conflicting ambitions, doubts, and insecurities that are part of the human condition
Helena : a novel by Machado de Assis( Book )

147 editions published between 1876 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 860 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The hand & the glove by Machado de Assis( Book )

107 editions published between 1907 and 2015 in 5 languages and held by 832 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The later novels of Machado de Assis -- notably Dom Casmurro and Esau and Jacob -- are well known in this country, but the earlier novels have never been translated. Here, in The Hand and the Glove (the Brazilian master's second novel), rendered in English for the first time by Albert I. Bagby, Jr., readers will find a younger, gentler Assis, writing a romantic comedy that is yet permeated with the lively wit characteristic of his later works. The story is a simple one-of love lost and love found. Of love lost by Estêvão, amiable but vacillating, who is bemused by his own romantic posturing
The psychiatrist, and other stories by Machado de Assis( Book )

157 editions published between 1941 and 2015 in 11 languages and held by 706 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Till now, madness has been thought a small island in an ocean of sanity. I am beginning to suspect that it is not an island at all but a continent." Brilliant physician Sima̋o Bacamarte sacrifices a prestigious career to return home and dedicate himself to the budding field of psychology. Bacamarte opens the first asylum in Brazil hoping to crown himself and his hometown with "imperishable laurels." But the doctor begins to see signs of insanity in more and more of his neighbors
Counselor Ayres' memorial by Machado de Assis( Book )

7 editions published between 1972 and 1982 in English and held by 625 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The love story that the Counselor narrates revolves around Fedilia and Tristao, who both are the godchildren of childless couple Aguiar and Dona Carmo. It is thought that the marriage between Aquiar and Dona Carmo is modeled after the relationship between de Assis and his wife, Caroline. The Counselorʹs diary entries chronicles Fideliaʹs transition from a widow bent on a lifelong habit of mourning her dead husband to a woman who rediscovers the world of the living and of love. Written in the late 1880s, the counselorʹs diary documents some of the social changes taking place in Brazil. There are several mentions of slavery and its abolition on May 13, 1888. The counselor does not himself engage much with the issue saying that old ways of thinking prevail even as he recognizes that he should assume more responsibility and interest in the matter. This stance apparently reflects the authorʹs own public disengagement with the issue of slavery and its abolition. de Assis, whose father was a mulatto, has been heavily criticized for not politicizing his works and addressing the plight of black Brazilians in his works. I disagree with this sentiment. -- Description from http://kinnareads.wordpress.com (Oct. 24, 2011)
Iaiá Garcia by Machado de Assis( Book )

83 editions published between 1952 and 2015 in 4 languages and held by 609 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The last of four novels that preceded Machado de Assis's famous trilogy of realistic masterpieces, Iaiá Garcia belongs to what critics have called the Brazilian author's ""romantic"" phase. But it is far more than that implies. Like his other early works, Iaiá Garcia foreshadows the themes and characters of Assis's most masterful novels. Iaiá Garcia intertwines the lives of three characters in a subtly and wryly developing relationship. While the youthful Iaiá is growing into womanhood, a tentative love affair occurs between the aristocratic Jorge and the prideful Estela. This affair is affl
