Preservation planning program : an assisted self-study manual for libraries by Pamela W Darling( Book )

2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This publication is designed as a guide for libraries that have elected to undertake a formal study of preservation needs in preparation for planning and implementing programs to meet those needs. The manual is divided into four sections. The first section (Chapters 1-2) provides an overview and orients the reader to the planning process. The next section (Chapters 3-4) covers the start-up of the preservation planning process and the tasks to be accomplished during Phase I of the study. The third section (Chapters 5-10) discusses the more detailed investigations to be carried out during Phase ii of the study and describes in-depth investigation of needs in the areas of environmental control, physical condition of the collections, organization of operation preservation units, disaster preparedness, staff and user education, and fundraising for preservation. In libraries where a more limited approach is preferred, the program can be adapted by selecting from among these areas. The last section (Chapter 11) focuses on Phase iii of the study, the preparation of the preservation plan. The manual also brings together a variety of checklists, outlines, and samples that help to guide investigations and analysis. Association for Research Libraries members who have used the publication in carrying out their own preservation planning are listed in the front of the publication. (Contains 25 references.) (Krn)

Current approaches to improving access to government documents by Carol A Turner( Book )

2 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 174 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on the responses of 77 Association of Research Libraries (arl) member libraries to a December 1986 survey of 106 arl libraries (a 73% response rate), this report profiles the current state of bibliographic access to federal publications. Following a brief discussion of survey background and methodology, a summary of survey results indicates that the typical respondent became a depository in 1912, selects 80% of the items offered on deposit, and maintains a centralized U.S. document collection. In addition, issues and needs for bibliographic access are identified, and case studies are presented for the following approaches to access: (1) the shelflist and printed indexes (Dartmouth College); (2) traditional cataloging (Pennsylvania State University and Cornell University); (3) loading the gpo (Government Printing Office) tapes (New York State Library, the University of Florida, Rice University, and Texas a&m University); and (4) retrospective conversion (Case Western Reserve University, the University of Cincinnati, Cornell University, the University of California at Los Angeles, and the University of California at Irvine). Finally, options and recommendations are presented for future action by individual libraries and cooperative programs. A federal depository collection profile and approaches to bibliographic access to U.S. federal government publications are presented in two tables. A 12-item selected bibliography and the survey form are also provided. (Km)
Measuring the book circulation use of a small academic library collection : a manual by Mary Kane( Book )

3 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The process described in this manual is designed to help small academic libraries systematically study the use of their circulating book collections. Originally developed in 1980, the manual has been used successfully in several small college libraries, both with and without assistance from outside consultants. In most cases, the study can be completed within 3 to 6 months with a comparatively small investment in staff training and supervision. After the preliminary steps of reviewing relevant information and deciding that the study should be conducted, the process consists of these stages: (1) deciding whether the library can carry out the study methodology on its own or if it requires assistance from other campus or external sources; (2) selecting the faculty and staff advisory group; (3) deciding on the appropriate data collection method; (4) training the data collectors; (5) collecting the data; (6) compiling, analyzing, and interpreting the data; (7) reviewing the results with the advisory group and other faculty and staff members; (8) developing recommendations for applying the results; and (9) implementing the resulting recommendations. A case study of the Lake Forest College survey experience, a four-page, selective bibliography, and a data collection and analysis guide with the necessary forms and sample data analyses are included. Integration of public and technical services functions : observations on organizational change in six member libraries of the Association of Research Libraries by B. J Busch( Book )

3 editions published between 1986 and 1987 in English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This study explores current trends and practices in functional integration based on site visits to six Association of Research Libraries (arl) member libraries selected on the basis of their responses to a Fall 1984 arl questionnaire. The responses indicated that, for all six libraries, some integration of functions existed, staff reorganization was underway or complete, cataloging was taking place in public areas, and professional librarians were participating in both public and technical services functions. The current situation of the six libraries and their decisions to reorganize are summarized, and the following developments and issues are considered: (1) collection management and service to users; (2) impact of automation; (3) organizational climate; (4) flexible use of staff; (5) staff morale; (6) reporting relationships; and (7) recruitment and training. Increased information delivery and an expansion outward in client-centered groupings are identified as possible future trends for public service areas, along with the continuing compression of massive technical services departments, and it is concluded that leadership and staff participation, as well as a clear sense of where the institution is going, are vital ingredients in successful organizational change. Notes and a 61-item selected bibliography are provided, and a listing of the issues addressed is appended. (Km)
