The theory of political economy by William Stanley Jevons ( Book )
143 editions published between 1871 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,399 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Originally published in 1871, The Theory of Political Economy was the first text to introduce the concept of utility theory into economics and the use of calculus as a way to simplify and present economic problems. In this classic work Jevons re-formulated the central problem of economics as one of how to maximise overall utility with a set amount of means of production. Utility expressed as a function became the basis of the a new theory of value which substantially differs from the classical political economists' labour theory of value. Drawing on his roots in the natural sciences Jevons revolutionised the tools and methods associated with political economy and kick-started the metamorphosis of the discipline. A century after its original publication The Theory of Political Economy continues to exert its influence in the teaching and study of modern economics. This re-issued classic contains a new introduction by Dr Harro Maas who explores the rich contextual history of Jevons and the Theory and the continued influence it has on modern day economics

Elementary lessons in logic: deductive and inductive by William Stanley Jevons ( Book )
184 editions published between 1870 and 2010 in 3 languages and held by 1,240 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"In preparing these Lessons I have attempted to show that Logic, even in its traditional form, can be made a highly useful subject of study, and a powerful means of mental exercise. With this view I have avoided the use of superfluous technical terms, and have abstained from entering into questions of a purely speculative or metaphysical character. For the puerile illustrations too often found in works on Logic I have generally substituted examples drawn from the distinct objects and ideas treated in the natural and experimental sciences; and in this and other respects have aimed at rendering these Lessons a suitable companion to a series of science school books. These Lessons I trust will introduce to the science many who have not leisure or inclination to read more elaborate treatises, and many who would not be attracted by the numerous but somewhat dry and brief compendiums published in past years. It is desirable that Lessons in Logic should be made the basis of many exercises, and for this purpose I have supplied abundance of questions and examples at the end of the book, some of which are selected from the examination papers of the Oxford"--Preface. The principles of science; a treatise on logic and scientific method by William Stanley Jevons ( Book )
108 editions published between 1874 and 2003 in 3 languages and held by 1,220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"I endeavor to show that hypothetical anticipation of nature is an essential part of inductive inquiry, and that it is the Newtonian method of deductive reasoning combined with elaborate experimental verification, which has led to all the great triumphs of scientific research. In attempting to give an explanation of this view of Scientific Method, I discuss such topics as logic, the theory of probability, the phenomena of nature, observation, experimentation, hypothesis, and inference." The elements of logic : a text-book for schools and colleges; being the elementary lessons in logic by William Stanley Jevons ( Book )
12 editions published between 1883 and 1911 in English and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Although there are many elementary works on logic, it has been for a long time felt that there is no text-book that precisely meets the wants of our colleges and normal schools. The nearest approach to the desideratum is the "Elementary Lessons in Logic" which constitutes the substance of this book. Its merits are its fresh treatment of the subject, its fullness and felicity of illustration, its clearness and vigor of style, its recognition of the logical methods of science as a part of logic, and its comprehensive presentation of recent views on the subject of reasoning. It was designed by its author, Professor W. Stanley Jevons, as a hand-book for students in the English universities." (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)
