"This book brings Stone face-to-face with some of his critics and supporters and allows Stone himself ample room to respond to their views. These writers critique Stone's most contested films to show how they may distort, amplify, or transcend the historical realities they appear to depict. Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 : how one film divided a nation by Robert Brent Toplin( Book )

9 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 683 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the heat of the 2004 presidential election campaign, no single work of speechmaking, writing, or media production fueled the fiery debate over George W. Bush's leadership as much as Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11. Certainly, no American documentary film ever provoked as much political controversy." "A noted film scholar now offers a much-needed appraisal of both the film and the furor surrounding it. Robert Brent Toplin first examines the development of Moore's ideas and the evolution of his filmmaking, then dissects Fahrenheit 9/11 and explores the many disagreements about the movie's truthfulness. Toplin considers the ways in which Moore based his arguments on a diverse array of "primary sources," many of which had received scant attention in the mainstream media - including the notorious seven-minute "Pet Goat" video depicting President Bush, either deliberately calm or paralyzed, in a Florida classroom on being told of the 9/11 attacks. Finally, Toplin considers the movie's impact, noting that some enthusiasts of the film thought it would help Democrats in the 2004 elections while others argued that Moore's strident approach to issues would turn off swing voters and contribute to a Republican victory." "Toplin's study shows that Michael Moore's film did more than shake up a nation; it also made an indelible contribution to the esteemed tradition of agenda-driven cinema. Especially in the light of the added weight given some of Moore's views by subsequent events, Toplin's book should encourage a new appreciation of Fahrenheit 9/11 and its impact."--Jacket

History by Hollywood : screening the American past by Robert Brent Toplin( Book )

9 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in English and held by 255 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This newly updated edition of History by Hollywood explores the question of what happens to history when Hollywood filmmakers get their hands on it. With a fresh look at recent films and television productions such as Titanic, Pearl Harbor, The Patriot, and John Adams, Robert Brent Toplin examines how filmmakers have interpreted American history through their movies." "Toplin discusses how writers, producers, and directors become involved in making historical films, what influences their interpretations of the past, and the responses they make to the controversies their works excite. With a realistic appreciation of the challenges filmmakers face, he effectively measures the strengths and weaknesses of Hollywood's presentation of history in the films Mississippi Burning, JFK, Sergeant York, Missing, Bonnie and Clyde, Patton, All the President's Men, and Norma Rae."--Jacket

Divided lenses : screen memories of war in East Asia by David Desser( )

1 edition published in 2016 in English and held by 0 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Thi is the first attempt to explore how the tumultuous years between 1931 and 1953 have been recreated and renegotiated in cinema. This period saw traumatic conflicts such as the Sino-Japanese War, the Pacific War, and the Korean War, and pivotal events such as the Rape of Nanjing, Pearl Harbor, the Battle of Iwo Jima, and the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, all of which left a lasting imprint on East Asia and the world. By bringing together a variety of specialists in the cinemas of East Asia and offering divergent yet complementary perspectives, the book explores how the legacies of war have been reimagined through the lens of film. This turbulent era opened with the Mukden Incident of 1931, which signaled a new page in Japanese militaristic aggression in East Asia, and culminated with the Korean War (1950-1953), a protracted conflict that broke out in the wake of Japan's post-World War II withdrawal from Korea. Divided Lenses explores the ways in which events of the intervening decades have continued to shape politics and popular culture throughout East Asia and the world. The essays in part I examine historical trends at work in various "national" cinemas, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Those in part 2 focus on specific themes present in the cinema portraying this period-such as comfort women in Chinese film, the Nanjing Massacre, or nationalism-and how they have been depicted or renegotiated in contemporary films
