Effective teaching of reading by Albert J Harris( Book )

19 editions published between 1962 and 1976 in English and held by 790 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The improvement of teaching characteristics and teacher behavior are important issues when discussing reading programs. Therefore, the following six major questions and conclusions about the effective reading teacher comprise the emphasis of this discussion. (1) What criteria can be used to measure teacher effectiveness? The main criterion used is pupil gain on standardized tests. (2) Can observers really distinguish degrees of teaching competence in reading instruction? Supervisors' evaluations of teaching effectiveness do not correlate well enough with pupil gain to be substituted for objective measurement. (3) What forms of motivation or class management produce superior results? The relationship between a teacher's motivational style and pupil learning is not distinct, as criticism and praise by teachers draw varying results. (4) What forms of cognitive teacher behavior are related to good achievement? Preliminary findings favor frequent verbal interchanges between teacher and pupil and the balanced use of several types of questions. (5) How can the beginning teacher be helped to develop teaching skills? There are such promising new developments in preservice teacher training as microteaching and programed tutoring. (6) How can the experienced teacher keep his interest and enthusiasm high? Superior leadership which involves teachers in planning and encourages them to try out ideas is important. References are included. (Nh)

Comparison of reading approaches in first grade teaching with disadvantaged children by Albert J Harris( Book )

4 editions published in 1966 in English and held by 63 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The relative effectiveness of the skills-centered approach and the language-experience approach to teaching reading to disadvantaged urban children in the first grade was examined, and methods compared. Approximately 50 teachers and 1,150 students made up the project sample. Types of data gathered included pretest and post-test scores of the pupils and instructional time logs, classroom observations, and preferred reading approaches from their teachers. Project results showed that the disadvantaged child can learn to read by the same methods that are used with middle and upper-class children. Among the four methods used, the basal reader method, employed with the skills-centered approach, appeared to be the ideal approach. The other methods were the basal reader method with phonovisual word recognition and two language-experience approaches with and without audio visual supplementation. Differences among the methods were sufficiently small as to be inconclusive. Continuation and replication studies were planned. (Jh)

Individualizing first-grade reading according to specific learning aptitudes by Albert J Harris( Book )

2 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A description is made of an attempt to apply to first grade reading instruction the idea that children can benefit when the teaching of reading is adapted to their cognitive style. Pretesting was done to discover the strengths and weaknesses in learning aptitudes, and the teaching procedure was modified to emphasize comparatively strong abilities. Two hypotheses were researched--that first-grade children with low visual perception readiness scores will benefit when given individualized instruction emphasizing kinesthetic or phonic instruction and that the ability to profit from such method of instruction is related to measured aptitude for the particular method of instruction. The 20 children given special instruction during individual conferences achieved better in reading than the statistical predictions based on the visual perception scores indicated. No significant association could be established with either the specific method of teaching used or the presence of presumed aptitude for that method
The CRAFT project : final report of a three-year project on teaching reading to disadvantaged urban Negro children by Albert J Harris( Book )

3 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The reading progress of disadvantaged urban Negro children was investigated over a 3-year period in the Comparing Approaches in First-Grade Teaching with Disadvantaged Children (craft) Project in New York City. Reading was taught by two basic approaches, skills centered and language experience. The former included a basal reader method and a phonovisual method (basal reader and a phonics program). The language experience approach included two variants, a regular language experience method and a language experience audiovisual method. In the original study, 1,141 pupils participated through the first grade, 656 through the second grade, and 1,128 through the third grade. In a replication study 680 pupils participated through the first grade and 402 through the second grade. No third graders were included. The class was used as the statistical unit when appropriate. Significance of difference was tested by analysis of variance and by t-tests. The major finding was that differences in class mean reading scores within each method were much larger than differences between means for the approaches and the methods. Residual effects of the study, recommendations for the future, and references are included. (Wb)
