Stiller : roman by
Max Frisch(
Book
)
492 editions published between 1938 and 2018 in 25 languages and held by 3,267 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Arrested and imprisoned in a small Swiss town, a prisoner begins this book with an exclamation: "I'm not Stiller!" He claims that his name is Jim White, that he has been jailed under false charges and under the wrong identity. To prove he is who he claims to be, he confesses to three unsolved murders and recalls in great detail an adventuresome life in America and Mexico among cowboys and peasants, in back alleys and docks. He is consumed by "the morbid impulse to convince," but no one believes him. This is a harrowing account part Kafka, part Camus of the power of self-deception and the freedom that ultimately lies in self-acceptance. Simultaneously haunting and humorous, I'm Not Stiller has come to be recognized as "one of the major post-war works of fiction" and a masterpiece of German literature.--Amazon.com

Andorra : a play in twelve scenes by
Max Frisch(
Book
)
170 editions published between 1864 and 2018 in 14 languages and held by 1,155 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The play is set in the tiny principality of Andorra in southwestern Europe. The story revolves around a young boy, Andri, who is brought up as the Jewish adoptive son of the town's Teacher, who claims to have rescued him as a child from the neighbouring, anti-semitic "Blacks" (implying Blackshirts). However, it is revealed during the first half of the play that the story of Andri's origin is a lie: he is the illegitimate child of the Teacher and the Señora, a lady from the Blacks, and Andri is not a Jew. When the play starts, Andri is engaged to the Teacher's daughter Barblin, who he has grown up with and who (unbeknownst to him) is his half-sister. While the Teacher tries to ensure they do not marry, Andri becomes the center of anti-semitism first from his fellow town members and later from invading Black forces--Wikipedia.com
