Narrative of the first expedition to navigate the Northwest Passage in a single vessel, the expedition that brought Amundsen to prominence as a polar explorer. In 1901 he gave up the idea of medicine and decided to become an explorer. After several months in Hamburg studying the science of terrestrial magnetism, he purchased an old ship, the Gjoa, 70ft long and thirty years old. He put in a 14 hp engine; then, with six dogs and enough provisions on board, he got under way with a crew of six on 17 June, 1903. His aim was to find the North-West Passage which had been sought in vain since the time of John Cabot. In September, he crossed Peel Sound and anchored in a sheltered bay on King William Island. Eskimos came up to him who knew of the existence of white men by oral tradition only. Seventy-two years earlier, James Ross, had sailed in these regions with Parry. Amundsen bought tooth and bone necklaces and clothes which later enriched the Oslo museum. He also spent two winters learning about the Eskimo way of life. In October, 1905, he set out again for the North-West Passage. On August 30th the Gjoa entered the Nome roadstead. For the first time in world history a ship sailing north of America had found a way from the Atlantic to the Pacific
Northern waters : Captain Roald Amundsen's oceanographic observations in the Arctic seas in 1901, with a discussion of the origin of the bottom-waters of the northern seas by Fridtjof Nansen( Book )

7 editions published between 1906 and 2014 in English and held by 52 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In later life the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for his humanitarian work, the explorer and scientist Fridtjof Nansen (1861-1930) encouraged and supported the 1901 voyage of his fellow Norwegian Roald Amundsen (1872-1928), publishing this account of its scientific findings in 1906. Amundsen had just purchased his famous boat, the Gjøa, and wanted to test her in Arctic waters. He planned to pay for the expedition by hunting seals, but wanted to carry out scientific work at the same time. On Nansen's advice, he decided to make oceanographic observations. After a six-month voyage, he returned with both observations and samples of water and plankton which considerably enlarged understanding of the bottom waters of the Norwegian Sea and the play of current in the area. Nansen's work supplies technical details, diagrams and maps from this remarkable scientific survey

Race for the South Pole : the expedition diaries of Scott and Amundsen by Roland Huntford( Book )

3 editions published in 2010 in English and held by 5 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Side by side, day by day, Huntford lets Scott and Amundsen speak for themselves, placing the diary entries of each (Scott's family had subtely edited the original). He includes superb original maps and photographs, and the never-before-translated diary of Amudsen's charismatic lead skier, Olav Bjaalund, which he translated, and an excellent introduction setting the scene. Scott, not surprisingly, pales compared to the easy competence of the Norwegians, who treated the whole thing, as Huntford explains, as a sporting contest
