A prose retelling of the story which is the second of the four operas in The Ring of the Nibelung. A wounded man stumbles into a small cottage deep in the woods. The woman who lives there gives him water and asks him to stay, but he refuses and tries to leave. Too late, the warrior who lives there arrives and bids him stay the night. As the man tells his story, he learns that he and his host are mortal enemies. The host decrees that he must give shelter to a stranger, but the next morning, they must fight to the death. That night, the wife reveals she is the man's sister, and flees with him. At the same time, at Valhalla, Wotan instructs his favorite daughter, Brunnhilde, to protect the man while Wotan's wife, Fricka, argues that he must be punished for he has stolen another man's wife
