"This volume offers an entirely fresh look at the enormous richness and variety of illustrations of the Old and New Testaments made by painters--of both pictures and frescos. The period covered ranges from the time when artists first became capable of fluent narrative illustration as we understand it today until the beginning of the twentieth century, when artists moved away from narrative painting."--Book jacket
Photodiscovery : masterworks of photography, 1840-1940 by Bruce Bernard( Book )

21 editions published between 1978 and 1981 in 3 languages and held by 865 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The extraordinary collection of photographs celebrates two eye-opening "discoveries" : first, that long before the invention of true color photography photographers were producing images rich in color--tones of gold, mauve, rose, blue, and many other hues; and, second, that the world's picture archives can still yield images of startling originality, often by well-known photographers. Thus, every photograph in this book is reproduced in full color, revealing the subtle tones of salt prints, ambrotypes, albumen prints, daguerreotypes, and other techniques whose real character has been known until recently only by collectors and connoisseurs. Here are works by the legendary pioneers Talbot, Daguerre, Nadar, Julia Margaret Cameron, Henri Le Secq, Gustave Le Gray, and Atget, as well as a host of astonishing pictures by unknown artists. There are also unfamiliar images by such masters as Stieglitz, August Sander, Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Martin Munkacsi, Kertész, Paul Strand, Dorothea Lange, and Margaret Bourke-White, bringing the collection up to the eve of World War II."--Jacket

Lucian Freud by Lucian Freud( Book )

9 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 433 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Lucian Freud's exhibition at the Whitechapel Art Gallery in London in 1993, followed by those at the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Museo Nacional Reina Sofia in Madrid celebrated his position, as Bruce Bernard describes, as 'one of the great portrait painters of all time - of people of all ages and both sexes, clothed and unclothed'. Since his early recognition while still a boy in London, Freud's reputation has soared for fifty years. Now in his seventies, his output has not diminished." "Lucian Freud is the definitive book of this great painter. It draws together many unknown and unpublished early works and reproduces all the later masterpieces from the now vanished early portrait of Francis Bacon to recent huge nudes of the late Leigh Bowery. Bruce Bernard, the author of the introductory essay, has know Freud since 1943. His knowledge of the artist and his work is unparalleled."--Jacket
Freud at work by Lucian Freud( Book )

15 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Freud at Work is a rare glimpse into the life of one of the most celebrated - and most private - artists working today. Though in his eighties, this great figurative artist continues to paint with undiminished energy and discipline. In 120 revealing black-and-white and color photographs taken in Lucian Freud's London studio, and in a fascinating in-depth interview, we come to understand the stages of the artist's work and the intensity of his interaction with his subjects - whether fellow artist David Hockney, the Queen of England, or performance artist Leigh Bowery, among others. Two remarkable photographers have been recording Freud at work over the past twenty years . The artist, uncharacteristically, allowed Bruce Bernard, the acclaimed picture editor, to photograph him in the studio, especially during the years he was working with Bowery as his model. Following Bernard's death in 2000, David Dawson, the painter's assistant, began photographing the daily life of the studio, showing us the progress of Freud's paintings, his models - some naked, some famous - and the painter himself caught in moments of intense concentration. Though Freud has always been reluctant to give interviews, talk about the painters he admires, or discuss how he works, his conversation here with the Australian writer Sebastian Smee is frank and revealing. Unlike any other book we have seen about Freud - comparable to David Douglas Duncan's books of photographs of Picasso - this important document invites us for the first time into the secret domain of the artist
