Subject and predicate in logic and grammar by P. F Strawson( Book )

38 editions published between 1752 and 2004 in English and German and held by 869 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Strawson sets out to explain the foundation of the basic combination of predication on which logic rests, and to reveal the general character of any adequate explanation of the grammatical structure of any type of natural language. The first part is largely devoted to discussing the types of linguistic expression that can be used to designate individual particulars in the basic subject-predicate forms, with the case of proper names being singled out for extensive examination. In the second part he describes a certain general idea of grammar, then within that tries gradually to develop another notion of subject and predicate that is different from and in a sense more comprehensive than the first. The first edition was published in 1974. Annotation : 2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)."

Analysis and metaphysics : an introduction to philosophy by P. F Strawson( Book )

24 editions published between 1992 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 777 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

All developed human beings possess a practical mastery of a vast range of concepts, including such basic structural notions as those of identity, truth, existence, material objects, mental states, space, and time; but a practical mastery does not entail theoretical understanding. It is that understanding which philosophy seeks to achieve. In this book, one of the most distinguished of living philosophers, assuming no previous knowledge of the subject on the part of the reader, sets out to explain and illustrate a certain conception of the nature of analytical philosophy. Strawson draws on his many years of teaching at Oxford University, during which he refined and developed what he regards as the most productive route to understanding the fundamental structure of human thinking. Among the distinctive features of his exposition are the displacement of an older, reductive conception of philosophical method (the ideal of "analyzing" complex ideas into simpler elements) in favor of elucidating the interconnections between the complex but irreducible notions which form the basic structure of our thinking; and the demonstration that the three traditionally distinguished departments of metaphysics (ontology), epistemology, and logic are but three aspects of one unified enquiry. Strawson has produced an elegant work that will be invaluable to students and stimulating for professional philosophers and general readers alike

Entity and identity : and other essays by P. F Strawson( Book )

32 editions published between 1997 and 2010 in English and held by 506 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gathered in this volume are selected essays by P.F. Strawson from the 1970s to the 1990s, in two areas of philosophy to which he has most notably contributed. The first twelve pieces concern the philosophy of language, a broad heading under which many controversial philosophical issues can be fruitfully approached. Questions such as the following are discussed: Do general properties exist as well as the particular things that have them? What is involved in reference to particular things? What exactly is formal logic as we now understand it? What do we mean when we say that something may happen or might have happened? What do we mean when we speak of the meaning of what we say? The volume is completed by four studies in Kantian metaphysics: these develop and strengthen Strawson's influential view of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and bring out the implications of this view for current metaphysical debates."--Jacket
