How does analysis cure? by Heinz Kohut( Book )

21 editions published between 1984 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 743 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Austro-American psychoanalyst Heinz Kohut was one of the foremost leaders in his field and developed the school of self-psychology, which sets aside the Freudian explanations for behavior and looks instead at self/object relationships and empathy in order to shed light on human behavior. In How Does Analysis Cure? Kohut presents the theoretical framework for self-psychology, and carefully lays out how the self develops over the course of time. Kohut also specifically defines healthy and unhealthy cases of Oedipal complexes and narcissism, while investigating the nature of analysis itself as treatment for pathologies. This in-depth examination of "(Bthe talking cure" explores the lesser studied phenomena of psychoanalysis, including when it is beneficial for analyses to be left unfinished, and the changing definition of "(Bnormal." An important work for working psychoanalysts, this book is important not only for psychologists, but also for anyone interested in the complex inner workings of the human psyche

Being of two minds : the vertical split in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

9 editions published between 1999 and 2013 in English and Italian and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"From the unfaithful husband to the binge eater, from the secret cross-dresser to the pilferer of worthless items, there are those who seem to live two lives, to be divided selves, to be literally of two minds. This division or "vertical split" appears in a person at odds with himself, a person who puzzles over, and even heartily dislikes, that parallel person who behaves in so repugnant a manner. In Being of Two Minds, Arnold Goldberg provides trenchant insight into such divided minds - their origins, their appearances, and their treatment." "As Goldberg shows, the repugnance felt by many therapists for offensive behaviors emanating from the patient's parallel self is frequently shared by the patient, who commonly despises misbehavior that he is unable to understand. Being of Two Minds begins to formulate just such understanding, to the great benefit of patient and therapist alike."--Jacket

A fresh look at psychoanalysis : the view from self psychology by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

12 editions published between 1988 and 2017 in English and held by 224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Goldberg uses the questions posed by self psychology as point of entry to a thoughtful consideration of issues with which every clinician wrestles: the scientific status analysis, the relationships among its competing theories, the role of empathy in analytic method, and the place of the ""self"" in the analyst's explanatory strategies. Clinical chapters show how the notion of the self can provide organizing insights into little-appreciated character structures
Moral stealth : how "correct behavior" insinuates itself into psychotherapeutic practice by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

The prisonhouse of psychoanalysis by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

8 editions published between 1990 and 2013 in English and held by 176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In The Prisonhouse of Psychoanalysis, Arnold Goldberg trains a searching, critical eye on his own profession. His subject matter is the system of interlocking constraints - theoretical, institutional, educational - that imprisons psychoanalysis and the psychoanalyst. His agenda is to sketch the shape analysis might take in the absence of these constraints. What emerges from these twin endeavors is a penetrating critique of psychoanalysis from the inside - from the vantage point of a senior analyst who has labored for many years within the prisonhouse that he now criticizes.>

Errant selves : a casebook of misbehavior by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

5 editions published between 2000 and 2013 in English and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A major addition to the psychoanalytic casebook literature, Errant Selves: A Casebook of Misbehavior is a collection of case studies dedicated to the psychoanalytic understanding and treatment of behavior disorders. Guided by the self-psychological framework developed by Arnold Goldberg in Being of Two Minds, the contributors to this volume explore cases of perversion, delinquency, and addiction in which the misbehavior at issue served primarily to ward off painful affects or states of dysphoria in order to achieve a basic integrity of the self. For these patients, the pathway to self-cohesion entailed the florid acting out typical of narcissistic behavior disorders."--BOOK JACKET

The analysis of failure : an investigation of failed cases in psychoanalysis and psychotherapy by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

9 editions published between 2011 and 2012 in English and held by 107 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis don't always work. Inevitably, a therapy or analysis may fail to alleviate the suffering of the patient. The reasons why this occurs are as manifold as the patients and analysts themselves, and oftentimes are a source of frustration and vexation to clinicians, who aren't always eager to discuss them. Taking the challenge head-on, Arnold Goldberg proposes to demystify failure in an effort to determine its essential meaning before determining its causes. Utilizing multiple vignettes of failed cases, he offers a deconstruction and a subsequent taxonomy of failure
New therapeutic visions by Arnold Goldberg( Book )

New Therapeutic Visions begins with Lachmann and Beebe's developmental perspectives on representational and selfobject transferences, followed by commentaries. In Section II, the self-psychological approach is brought to bear on the clinical treatment of an adolescent girl, incest survivors, addictive personalities, patients exhibiting codependency, and a case of desomatization. Section III, on applied self psychology, contains chapters on the theory of creativity; subjectivism, relativism, and realism in psychoanalysis; and quantum physics and self psychology.
