The state of the Presidency by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

24 editions published between 1974 and 1990 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,577 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The State of the Presidency is a fresh and comprehensive interpretation of the modern American presidency. It is a political analysis of the promise and problems in this troubled institution, based on extensive interviews with more than 100 White House aides and an equal number of cabinet officers and departmental personnel. It is also based in part on Tom Cronin's personal experience as a White House aide, his involvement in Congress, and his work for a cabinet member."--Book cover
Colorado politics and policy : governing a purple state by Thomas E Cronin( )

11 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 1,278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Survey after survey reveals that many Coloradans believe that the U.S. government is too big, too wasteful, and too intrusive. Yet Colorado is arguably one of the most federally subsidized states in the union, with forests, national parks, military bases, and research laboratories benefiting from the federal government’s largesse.A concise history of Colorado’s constitution and central political institutions, Colorado Politics and Policy offers a probing analysis of the state’s political cultures. It shows how the state, in many ways a template of the deeply contrary politics of the nation, puts political power into the hands of an ever-more-polarized electorate increasingly inclined to put the concerns of government to the test of the citizen-initiative. Colorado Politics and Policy is the result of broad-gauged and sophisticated research which includes author interviews with citizens and officials across the state, three specially commissioned statewide public opinion surveys, and extensive interviews with governors, legislators, judges, lobbyists, interest group leaders, and leading political analysts. This fresh and engaging interpretation is essential reading for those who want to understand Colorado’s major election trends, chief public policy and budget challenges, and this distinctively purple state’s unique political history."-- Amazon

"What makes this new biography unique is McLynn's perceptive analysis of both the personalities around Napoleon (including his two wives and a very large family) and the events of his spectacular career. His obsession with his family, and his conviction that every man has his price, reveal Napoleon as closer to a modern Mafia godfather than a visionary European."--Jacket
Direct democracy : the politics of initiative, referendum, and recall by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

26 editions published between 1989 and 2014 in English and held by 905 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Americans have grown increasingly restive when dissatisfied with legislation or elected officials between elections. As a result, public interest in and use of the devices created to give voters a greater direct voice in our democracy, referendum, recall, and initiative, have proliferated in recent years. Cronin has thoroughly examined the development of recall petitions, local initiatives, and referenda and interviewed those involved in the recent growth of the direct democracy movement. He finds that there are difficulties with direct democracy devices, yet he concludes that these procedures have been a lasting, and generally a positive, part of the American political landscape. - p. The paradoxes of the American presidency by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

3 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 887 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What exactly do Americans want from their president? A strong, innovative leader or someone who simply follows the will of the people? A president who insists on the ideals of a party or someone who builds bipartisan support? A president who exercises power forcefully or someone who establishes consensus before doing anything? The answer, according to Thomas E. Cronin and Michael A. Genovese in their new book, The Paradoxes of the American Presidency, is that Americans want the president to be a leader and a follower, partisan and bipartisan, innovative and conservative. For example, we expect our presidents to provide visionary leadership, and yet at the same time to be ever-sensitive to public opinion polls. We want a president with the power to solve the nation's problems, yet we are inherently suspicious of centralized leadership and the abuse of power. Such conflicting demands put the president in an often impossible position. Indeed, Cronin and Genovese contend the duties and challenges of the office are so capacious and the public's expectations often so inconsistent that whatever course of action a president takes may result in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of criticism. While there is no easy way out of the constant paradoxical dilemmas presidents face, there are ways to deal with these conflicting and sometimes inflated expectations. Yet even master political statecraft is often inadequate in reconciling the paradoxes of the American presidency

The paradoxes of the American presidency by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

28 editions published between 1997 and 2018 in English and held by 642 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the second edition of this book, Cronin and Genovese explore the complex institution of the American presidency by presenting a series of paradoxes that shape and define the office. They examine the clashing expectations and demands placed upon presidents, offering, students the opportunity to understand the dilemma faced by all incumbents - how to bring leadership into a system where expectations exceed the resources and power available to them. The authors focus on the various relationships all presidents must develop if they are to lead successfully - relations between the president and: Congress, the public, the courts, the cabinet, and the Vice President

Imagining a great republic : political novels and the idea of America by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

8 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 239 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the first comprehensive reading of dozens of American literary and social culture classics, Tom Cronin, one of America's most astute students of the American political tradition, tells the story of the American political experiment through the eyes of forty major novelists, from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Hunter S. Thompson. They have been moral and civic consciousness-raisers as we have navigated the zigs and zags, the successes and setbacks, and the slow awkward evolution of the American political experiment. Constitutional democracy, equal justice for all, the American Dream, and American Exceptionalism are all part of our country's narrative. But, as Imagining a Great Republic explains, there has never been just a single American narrative--we have competing stories, just as we have competing American Dreams and competing ways of imagining a more perfect political union. Recognizing and understanding these competing values is a key part of being American. Cronin's book explains how this is possible and why we should all be proud to be American."--Book jacket
