"What makes this new biography unique is McLynn's perceptive analysis of both the personalities around Napoleon (including his two wives and a very large family) and the events of his spectacular career. His obsession with his family, and his conviction that every man has his price, reveal Napoleon as closer to a modern Mafia godfather than a visionary European."--Jacket
The state of the Presidency by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

23 editions published between 1974 and 1990 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,584 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The State of the Presidency is a fresh and comprehensive interpretation of the modern American presidency. It is a political analysis of the promise and problems in this troubled institution, based on extensive interviews with more than 100 White House aides and an equal number of cabinet officers and departmental personnel. It is also based in part on Tom Cronin's personal experience as a White House aide, his involvement in Congress, and his work for a cabinet member."--Book cover
The paradoxes of the American presidency by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

27 editions published between 1998 and 2018 in English and held by 1,510 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What exactly do Americans want from their president? A strong, innovative leader or someone who simply follows the will of the people? A president who insists on the ideals of a party or someone who builds bipartisan support? A president who exercises power forcefully or someone who establishes consensus before doing anything? The answer, according to Thomas E. Cronin and Michael A. Genovese in their new book, The Paradoxes of the American Presidency, is that Americans want the president to be a leader and a follower, partisan and bipartisan, innovative and conservative. For example, we expect our presidents to provide visionary leadership, and yet at the same time to be ever-sensitive to public opinion polls. We want a president with the power to solve the nation's problems, yet we are inherently suspicious of centralized leadership and the abuse of power. Such conflicting demands put the president in an often impossible position. Indeed, Cronin and Genovese contend the duties and challenges of the office are so capacious and the public's expectations often so inconsistent that whatever course of action a president takes may result in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of criticism. While there is no easy way out of the constant paradoxical dilemmas presidents face, there are ways to deal with these conflicting and sometimes inflated expectations. Yet even master political statecraft is often inadequate in reconciling the paradoxes of the American presidency

Direct democracy : the politics of initiative, referendum, and recall by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

24 editions published between 1989 and 2000 in English and held by 869 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Americans have grown increasingly restive when dissatisfied with legislation or elected officials between elections. As a result, public interest in and use of the devices created to give voters a greater direct voice in our democracy, referendum, recall, and initiative, have proliferated in recent years. Cronin has thoroughly examined the development of recall petitions, local initiatives, and referenda and interviewed those involved in the recent growth of the direct democracy movement. He finds that there are difficulties with direct democracy devices, yet he concludes that these procedures have been a lasting, and generally a positive, part of the American political landscape. - p. Imagining a great republic : political novels and the idea of America by Thomas E Cronin( Book )

5 editions published between 2017 and 2018 in English and held by 72 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the first comprehensive reading of dozens of American literary and social culture classics, Tom Cronin, one of America's most astute students of the American political tradition, tells the story of the American political experiment through the eyes of forty major novelists, from Harriet Beecher Stowe to Hunter S. Thompson. They have been moral and civic consciousness-raisers as we have navigated the zigs and zags, the successes and setbacks and the slow awkward evolution of the American political experiment. Constitutional democracy, equal justice for all, the American Dream, and American Exceptionalism are all part of our country's narrative. But, as Imagining a Great Republic explains, there has never been just a single American narrative-we have competing stories, just as we have competing American Dreams and competing ways of imagining a more perfect political union. Recognizing and understanding these competing values is a key part of being American. Cronin's book explains how this is possible, and why we should all be proud to be American
