An essential part of this scholarship is contained within this lavishly illustrated selection of lectures delivered by distinguished historians to the British Academy. Studies in the ancient history of Northern Iraq by David Oates ( Book )
5 editions published between 1968 and 2005 in English and held by 388 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This is a facsimile reprint of the trail-blazing book by David Oates which has been out-of-print far too long. It is primarily the report of his survey and excavation of sites in northern Iraq between 1954 and 1958. But it is at the same time a memorial to the great explorer, Sir Aurel Stein, whose pioneer field-work on the Roman frontiers in Iraq in 1938-39 had provided the initial stimulus. Apart from preliminary summaries, this work remained unpublished in the difficult years between 1939 and Stein's death in Kabul in 1943." "Subsequent examination of Stein's draft-manuscript showed that further investigation and a more leisurely assessment were demanded by the range and importance of the subject and by changing perspectives. With the aid of the Stein bequest to the British Academy, David Oates gave new substance to 'the lost traveller's dream', extending it widely into a more general account of the Mesopotamian scene from the Assyrian period in the second millennium B.C. to the struggles of Rome and Byzantium with the Parthians and Sasanians in the early centuries A.D. The book concludes with a study of little-known Hellenistic, Roman and Parthian pottery, mostly from the author's excavations."--BOOK JACKET
A thematic catalogue of the works of Michel-Richard de Lalande (1657-1726) by Lionel Sawkins ( )
4 editions published in 2005 in English and held by 380 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"For 43 years (1683-1726), Lalande's music occupied a central position at the courts of Louis XIV and Louis XV, where his grands motets and instrumental suites set a style admired then and long after, both in the royal chapel and at the Paris Concert spirituel. Recent festivals at Versailles, as well as many editions, performances and recordings worldwide, underline the importance of Lalande as an undisputed master of the French Baroque. With over 3,000 music examples, details of performing requirements and of all source materials, as well as with comprehensive indexes and thematic locators, this Thematic Catalogue makes Lalande's compositions fully accessible to musicians, musicologists, and music lovers."--BOOK JACKET
