121 editions published between 1920 and 2001 in English and held by 2,372 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Joan of Arc was fourteen when she first heard the voices. She was seventeen when she took command of the armies of France -- a peasant girl in the early fifteenth century in charge of a nation's forces. At nineteen she was captured by the British and tried as a witch by a church court. Before her twentieth birthday she was burned at the stake. In 1920 she was canonized a saint." "Vita Sackville-West fervently tells the story of one of history's most legendary women. Relying on the detailed records from her trial, Sackville-West reconstructs the scenes of the story: the slow growth of Joan's convictions, the great victories, and the pathos of her death. The eagle and the dove, a study in contrasts: St. Teresa of Avila, St. Therese of Lisieux by V Sackville-West( Book )

71 editions published between 1943 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 896 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The lives of these two saints with similar names could hardly be more contrasting. St. Teresa, reformer of the Carmelites, 'busy woman and great saint', endured the religious mania of sixteenth-century Spain and lived in a state of near perpetual ecstasy. Thérèse, on the other hand, lived the quiet life of a nun in late-nineteenth-century France, was meek, devout and perhaps rather dim. She became a saint of the common people, largely because of the ordinariness of her life (excepting the odd vision)

Challenge by V Sackville-West( Book )

25 editions published between 1923 and 2012 in English and French and held by 525 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Challenge was Vita Sackville-West's second novel. It was ready to go to print in 1920, but the author suddenly changed her mind for fear of the scandal it would cause. Vita's love affair with Violet Trefusis had reached its peak and they decided to abandon everything - children and husbands included - to elope to France. They returned to their families eventually, but Challenge remains a testament to their love. The hero, Julian, may be a Byronic young Englishman, and Eve the woman he adores; it may be an adventure tale set on a Greek island. But really, this is a love story, written in the presence of the beloved and inspired by her. And, as its title implies, the novel is a challenge to the society that condemned Vita and her lover-- Back cover
