The ecclesiastical history of the English nation by Bede ( Book )
169 editions published between 1723 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 2,468 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Ecclesiastical History of the English People (AD 731) is Bede's most famous work. A scholarly monk working in the north-east of England, Bede wrote the five books of the History in Latin. Starting with the invasion of Julius Caesar in the first century BC, he recorded the history of the English up to his own day. In particular, he described their conversion and the complex ways in which Christianity was spread among them. As well as providing the authoritative Colgrave translation of the Ecclesiastical History, this edition includes a new translation of the Greater Chronicle, in which Bede examines the Roman Empire and contemporary Europe. His Letter to Egbert gives his final reflections on the English Church just before his death, and all three texts here are further illuminated by a detailed introduction and explanatory notes
A history of the English Church and people by Bede ( Book )
95 editions published between 1955 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,876 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Written in AD 731, Bede's work opens with a background sketch of Roman Britain's geography and history. It goes on to tell of the kings and bishops, monks and nuns who helped to develop Anglo-Saxon government and religion during the crucial formative years of the English people. Leo Sherley-Price's translation brings us an accurate and readable version, in modern English, of a unique historical document. This edition now includes Bede's Letter to Egbert concerning pastoral care in early Anglo-Saxon England, at the heart of which lay Bede's denunciation of the false monasteries; and The Death of Bede, an admirable eye-witness account by Cuthbert, monk and later Abbot of Jarrow, both translated by D.H. Farmer

Bede's best known work, An Ecclesiastical History of the English People, was written in Latin and is not immediately easy to understand and follow. And yet it is a key text for any student of English history. Rowan Williams shows in his introduction how Bede works to create a sense of national destiny for the new English kingdoms of the seventh century, a sense that has helped to shape English self-awareness through the centuries, by using the imagery both of imperial Rome and of biblical Israel. But Bede also wrestles with the difficult question of how the Church relates to and serves the pol

From the patristic age until the Gregorian calendar reform of 1582, computus the science of time reckoning and art of calendar construction was a subject of intense concern to medieval people. Bedes The Reckoning of Time (De temporum ratione) was the first comprehensive treatise on this subject, and the model and reference for all subsequent teaching, discussion and criticism of the Christian calendar. The Reckoning of Time is a systematic exposition of the Julian solar calendar and the Paschal table of Dionysius Exiguus, with their related formulae for calculating dates. But it is more t
