The adult learner : a neglected species by Malcolm S Knowles( Book )

38 editions published between 1973 and 2011 in English and Spanish and held by 2,374 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traditional theories of learning and the teaching practices resulting from them are reviewed. Most theories of adult learning are based on research into the learning of children, which in turn is founded upon theories of animal learning. These theories, formulated under laboratory conditions, are artificial at best--and not complex enough to apply to adult human beings. Emerging theories of adult learning, however, are based on the unique characteristics of adults as learners and result in differentiated educational practices. Human resource development (hrd) is based on many of these newer theories and serves as a guideline for action. Knowles' andragogical theory is based on four assumptions which differ from those of pedagogy: (1) changes in self-concept, (2) the role of experience, (3) readiness to learn, and (4) orientation to learning. As a guideline for developing programs and for selecting and training teachers, the andragogical model of hrd is very applicable. Among the appendixes are "Is It Skinner or Nothing" and "An Approach to a Differential Psychology of the Adult Potential." There is a eleven-page bibliography. (Ms)

Self-directed learning : a guide for learners and teachers by Malcolm S Knowles( Book )

29 editions published between 1975 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 1,085 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The self-directed learning guide consists of three parts: The Learner, The Teacher, and Learning Resources. Part 1 contains four inquiry projects which examine the importance of self-directed learning, its assumptions, required competencies, and learning plan design. The nature of the inquiry between author and teacher in Part 2 is to explore the implications for teachers of having self-directed learners as students. Knowles visualizes the teacher role as that of facilitator of learning rather than teacher, procedural guide rather than content transmitter. The reader is led through a semester graduate course in "The Nature of Adult Education," taught by the author, where the teacher performs as a facilitator and resource to self-directed learners. Part 3 consists of 15 learning resources: a comparison of assumptions and processes, competencies of self-directed learning, a learning contract, descriptions of self-directed learners, relationship-building exercises, a consultation skill-practice exercise, a self-assessment exercise, a content-course self-assessment instrument, guidelines for stating objectives, questioning strategies/techniques, relating methods to objectives, exercises in reading a book proactively and using human resources proactively, types of evidence for different objectives, and examples of rating scales. The appendix contains guidelines for contract learning. (Ea)

Higher adult education in the United States; the current picture, trends, and issues by Malcolm S Knowles( Book )

10 editions published between 1969 and 1970 in English and held by 375 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This survey provides a guide for discussion and inquiry for administrators and faculty members of higher educational institutions, people in government who work in adult education, and citizens who are concerned with this area of educational service. Essentially, it is an analysis of the literature of higher adult education from 1960 through 1968, as documented by the eric clearinghouse on adult education at Syracuse University. It starts with an attempt to place the field of adult education in perspective. Chapter 2 presents a synopsis of the historical roots and a broad picture of the current situation. Chapter 3 identifies some of the external and internal forces that seem to be pressing for change. Chapter 4 summarizes the trends discerned in the literature; and Chapter 5 isolates the national, state, and institutional issues that are revealed as concerns of adult educators in institutions of higher education. A selected bibliography, with abstracts, is included. (Se)

13 editions published between 1976 and 1994 in English and Undetermined and held by 357 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, which is a revised version of a book first published in 1962, examines the present state of the field of adult education (ae) by examining its origins and patterns of growth. Part 1, which traces the emergence of institutions for the education of adults, covers the following topics: colonial foundations and antecedents in 1600-1779 (social setting and early beginnings of education); the nation's growth and its quest for diffusion of knowledge in 1780-1865 (social setting, education of democratic citizens, growth/diffusion of knowledge, shaping of the national education system, evening schools, colleges/universities); the maturation of a nation and multiplication of its ae institutions in 1866-1920; and development of institutions for education of adults, 1921-1961. Discussed in part 2 are the development of coordinative organizations within segments of the field and efforts to establish a national organization for ae, 1924-1961. Part 3 reviews the characteristics and dynamics of ae as a field and speculates on its future. Presented in part 4 are observations on developments in the following aspects of ae from 1961-1976: institutional developments; national organization and coordination; characteristics of the field; and the future of ae. Three bibliographies contain 634 references. (Mn)
