Reading the man : a portrait of Robert E. Lee through his private letters by
Elizabeth Brown Pryor(
Book
)
7 editions published between 2007 and 2008 in English and held by 998 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
For the 200th anniversary of Robert E. Lee's birth, a new portrait drawing on previously unpublished correspondence. Lee's war correspondence is well known, but the great majority of his most intimate letters have never been made public. They reveal a far more complex and contradictory man than the one who comes most readily to the imagination. This book presents dozens of these letters in their entirety, most by Lee but a few by family members. Each letter becomes a departure point for an essay that shows what the letter uniquely reveals about Lee's time or character. The material covers all aspects of Lee's life--his early years, West Point, his work as an engineer, his relationships with his children and his slaves, his decision to join the South, his thoughts on military strategy, and his disappointments after defeat in the Civil War.--From publisher description

Lee's dispatches : unpublished letters of General Robert E. Lee, C.S.A., to Jefferson Davis and the War Department of the
Confederate States of America, 1862-65. by
Robert E Lee(
Book
)
27 editions published between 1915 and 1994 in English and held by 995 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This is one of the most important and revealing of all Civil War volumes. It has been practically unobtainable since the limited publication of 750 copies in 1915. Now new material in the form of dispatches not then available has been added, with a foreword by Grady McWhiney. When purchased by W.J. DeRenne, of Georgia, the letters were pasted in one volume and the telegrams in another. How the volumes came into the hands of the person from whom they were purchased was never known by either Dr. Freeman or Mr. DeRenne. From internal evidence they both felt certain that these dispatches and telegrams were from a file kept for his own use by President Davis himself. Presumably carried or sent South when Richmond fell, the volumes were probably lost on the journey. At the time of original publication none of the letters or telegrams included in the book had appeared in any other printed work. Some of the letters broaden our view of Lee's strategy and throw significant light on disputed movements. Some show how slow he was to blame and ready to applaud his subordinates. Others contain expressions of cautious forebodings or frank warnings. All show that there was always open confidence and full co-operation between Lee and Davis. But most of all they testify to the nobility of character of one of our greatest heroes during the thirty-four months of his life when he was subjected to every test by which the heart of a man may be tried. -- Book jacket
