Methods of nonlinear analysis by
Richard Bellman(
Book
)
43 editions published between 1970 and 1973 in 3 languages and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a nonLagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation; methods for lowrank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; and methods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particular branches, such as optimal filtering and information compression. Best operator approximation, NonLagrange interpolation, Generic KarhunenLoeve transform Generalised lowrank matrix approximation Optimal data compression Optimal nonlinear filtering

Adaptive control processes : a guided tour by
Richard Bellman(
Book
)
40 editions published between 1961 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 654 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The aim of this work is to present a unified approach to the modern field of control theory and to provide a technique for making problems involving deterministic, stochastic, and adaptive processes of both linear and nonlinear type amenable to machine solution. Mr. Bellman has used the theory of dynamic programming to formulate, analyze, and prepare these processes for numerical treatment by digital computers. The unique concept of the book is that of a single problem stretching from recognition and formulation to analytic treatment and computational solution. Due to the emphasis upon ideas and concepts, this book is equally suited for the pure and applied mathematician, and for control engineers in all fields.Originally published in 1961.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest printondemand technology to again make available previously outofprint books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

A brief introduction to theta functions by
Richard Bellman(
Book
)
15 editions published between 1961 and 2015 in English and held by 647 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Brief but intriguing, this monograph on the theory of elliptic functions was written by one of America's most prominent and widely read mathematicians. Richard Bellman encompasses a wealth of material in a succession of short chapters, spotlighting high points of the fundamental regions of elliptic functions and illustrating powerful and versatile analytic methods. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, this introductory treatment is largely selfcontained. Topics include Fourier series, sufficient conditions, the Laplace transform, results of Doetsch and KoberErdelyi, Gaussian sums, and Euler's formulas and functional equations. Additional subjects include partial fractions, mock theta functions, Hermite's method, convergence proof, elementary functional relations, multidimensional Poisson summation formula, the modular transformation, and many other areas

Numerical inversion of the Laplace transform: applications to biology, economics, engineering, and physics by
Richard Bellman(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1963 and 1966 in English and Undetermined and held by 615 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Usual analytic methods of inverting the Laplace transformation are mostly impractical for numerical work. A method applicable to the numerical analysis of the inverse Laplace transform is discussed. Numerical examples are given to illustrate this method

An introduction to invariant imbedding by
Richard Bellman(
Book
)
31 editions published between 1970 and 1992 in English and Undetermined and held by 546 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Here is a book that provides the classical foundations of invariant imbedding, a concept that provided the first indication of the connection between transport theory and the Riccati Equation. The reprinting of this classic volume was prompted by a revival of interest in the subject area because of its uses for inverse problems. The major part of the book consists of applications of the invariant imbedding method to specific areas that are of interest to engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians, and numerical analysts. A large set of problems can be found at the end of each chapter. Numerous problems on apparently disparate matters such as Riccati equations, continued fractions, functional equations, and Laplace transforms are included. The exercises present the reader with "reallife" situations. The material is accessible to a general audience, however, the authors do not hesitate to state, and even to prove, a rigorous theorem when one is available. To keep the original flavor of the book, very few changes were made to the manuscript; typographical errors were corrected and slight changes in word order were made to reduce ambiguities
