An introduction to inequalities by Edwin F Beckenbach( Book )

120 editions published between 1961 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 3,675 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Most people, when they think of mathematics, think first of numbers and equations-the number (x)=that number (y). But professional mathematicians, in dealing with quantities that can be ordered according to their size, often are more interested in unequal magnitudes that are equal. This book provides an introduction to the fascinating world of inequalities beginning with a systematic discussion of the relation 'greater than' and the meaning of 'absolute values' of numbers, and ending with descriptions of some unusual geometries. In the course of the book, the reader will encounter some of the more famous inequalities in mathematics. Starting with the basic order properties of real numbers, this book carries the reader through the classical inequalities of Cauchy, Minkowsky and Hörder with many variants and applications. The concluding chapter points the way to other metrics in the plane and the interrelations between geometry (convexity) and algebra (inequalities)

Introduction to matrix analysis by Richard Bellman( Book )

86 editions published between 1960 and 1997 in 4 languages and held by 1,684 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Long considered to be a classic in its field, this was the first book in English to include three basic fields of the analysis of matrices -- symmetric matrices and quadratic forms, matrices and differential equations, and positive matrices and their use in probability theory and mathematical economics. Written in lucid, concise terms, this volume covers all the key aspects of matrix analysis and presents a variety of fundamental methods

Adaptive control processes : a guided tour by Richard Bellman( Book )

49 editions published between 1961 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 1,277 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The aim of this work is to present a unified approach to the modern field of control theory and to provide a technique for making problems involving deterministic, stochastic, and adaptive processes of both linear and nonlinear type amenable to machine solution. Mr. Bellman has used the theory of dynamic programming to formulate, analyze, and prepare these processes for numerical treatment by digital computers. The unique concept of the book is that of a single problem stretching from recognition and formulation to analytic treatment and computational solution. Due to the emphasis upon ideas and concepts, this book is equally suited for the pure and applied mathematician, and for control engineers in all fields.Originally published in 1961.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905
Some vistas of modern mathematics; dynamic programming, invariant imbedding, and the mathematical biosciences by Richard Bellman( )

23 editions published between 1968 and 2015 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,260 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Rapid advances in the physical and biological sciences and in related technologies have brought about equally farreaching changes in mathematical research. Focusing on control theory, invariant imbedding, dynamic programming, and quasilinearization, Mr. Bellman explores with ease and clarity the mathematical research problems arising from scientific questions in engineering, physics, biology, and medicine. Special attention is paid in these essays to the use of the digital computer in obtaining the numerical solution of numerical problems, its influence in the formulation of new and old scient

A brief introduction to theta functions by Richard Bellman( Book )

15 editions published between 1961 and 2015 in English and held by 780 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Brief but intriguing, this monograph on the theory of elliptic functions was written by one of America's most prominent and widely read mathematicians. Encompassing a wealth of material in a succession of short chapters, Richard Bellman spotlights high points of the fundamental regions and illustrates powerful and versatile analytic methods. Suitable for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in mathematics, this introductory treatment is largely self-contained. Topics include Fourier series, sufficient conditions, the Laplace transform, results of Doetsch and Kober-Erdelyi, Gaussian sums, and Euler's formulas and functional equations. Additional subjects include partial fractions, mock theta functions, Hermite's method, convergence proof, elementary functional relations, multidimensional Poisson summation formula, the modular transformation, and many other areas

The Laplace transform by Richard Bellman( )

19 editions published between 1981 and 2013 in English and held by 690 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The classical theory of the Laplace Transform can open many new avenues when viewed from a modern, semi-classical point of view. In this book, the author re-examines the Laplace Transform and presents a study of many of the applications to differential equations, differential-difference equations and the renewal equation
Numerical inversion of the Laplace transform: applications to biology, economics, engineering, and physics by Richard Bellman( Book )

19 editions published between 1963 and 1977 in English and held by 611 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Usual analytic methods of inverting the Laplace transformation are mostly impractical for numerical work. A method applicable to the numerical analysis of the inverse Laplace transform is discussed. Numerical examples are given to illustrate this method
An introduction to invariant imbedding by Richard Bellman( Book )

30 editions published between 1970 and 1992 in English and held by 583 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Here is a book that provides the classical foundations of invariant imbedding, a concept that provided the first indication of the connection between transport theory and the Riccati Equation. The reprinting of this classic volume was prompted by a revival of interest in the subject area because of its uses for inverse problems. The major part of the book consists of applications of the invariant imbedding method to specific areas that are of interest to engineers, physicists, applied mathematicians, and numerical analysts. A large set of problems can be found at the end of each chapter. Numerous problems on apparently disparate matters such as Riccati equations, continued fractions, functional equations, and Laplace transforms are included. The exercises present the reader with "real-life" situations. The material is accessible to a general audience, however, the authors do not hesitate to state, and even to prove, a rigorous theorem when one is available. To keep the original flavor of the book, very few changes were made to the manuscript; typographical errors were corrected and slight changes in word order were made to reduce ambiguities
Quasilinearization and nonlinear boundary-value problems by Richard Bellman( Book )
