"Here the author of How to Solve It explains how to become a "good guesser." Marked by G. Polya's simple, energetic prose and use of clever examples from a wide range of human activities, this twovolume work explores techniques of guessing, inductive reasoning, and reasoning by analogy, and the role they play in the most rigorous of deductive disciplines."Book cover

Problems and theorems in analysis by
George Pólya(
Book
)
178 editions published between 1972 and 2004 in 4 languages and held by 1,448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the reviews: " ... In the past, more of the leading mathematicians proposed and solved problems than today, and there were problem departments in many journals. Pólya and Szego must have combed all of the large problem literature from about 1850 to 1925 for their material, and their collection of the best in analysis is a heritage of lasting value. The work is unashamedly dated. With few exceptions, all of its material comes from before 1925. We can judge its vintage by a brief look at the author indices (combined). Let's start on the C's: Cantor, Carathéodory, Carleman, Carlson, Catalan, Cauchy, Cayley, Cesàro, ... Or the L's: Lacour, Lagrange, Laguerre, Laisant, Lambert, Landau, Laplace, Lasker, Laurent, Lebesgue, Legendre, ... Omission is also information: Carlitz, Erdös, Moser, etc."Bull. Americ. Math. Soc

"This classic of the mathematical literature forms a comprehensive study of the inequalities used throughout mathematics. First published in 1934, it presents clearly and exhaustively both the statement and proof of all the standard inequalities of analysis. The authors were well known for their powers of exposition and were able here to make the subject accessible to a wide audience of mathematicians."Publisher's website

Notes on introductory combinatorics by
George Pólya(
Book
)
30 editions published between 1983 and 2010 in English and German and held by 680 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Developed from the authors' introductory combinatorics course, this book focuses on a branch of mathematics which plays a crucial role in computer science. Combinatorial methods provide many analytical tools used for determining the expected performance of computer algorithms. Elementary subjects such as combinations and permutations, and mathematical tools such as generating functions and Pólya's Theory of Counting, are covered, as are analyses of specific problems such as Ramsey Theory, matchings, and Hamiltonian and Eulerian paths. This introduction will provide students with a solid foundation in the subject. "This is a delightful little paperback which presents a daybyday transcription of a course taught jointly by Pólya and Tarjan at Stanford University. Woods, the teaching assistant for the class, did a very good job of merging class notes into an interesting minitextbook; he also included the exercises, homework, and tests assigned in the class (a very helpful addition for other instructors in the field). The notes are very well illustrated throughout and Woods and the Birkhäuser publishers produced a very pleasant text. One can count on [Pólya and Tarjan] for new insights and a fresh outlook. Both instructors taught by presenting a succession of examples rather than by presenting a body of theory ... [The book] is very well suited as supplementary material for any introductory class on combinatorics; as such, it is very highly recommended. Finally, for all of us who like the topic and delight in observing skilled professionals at work, this book is entertaining and, yes, instructive, reading."Mathematical Reviews (Review of the original hardcover edition) "The mathematical community welcomes this book as a final contribution to honour the teacher G. Pólya."Zentralblatt MATH (Review of the original hardcover edition)

Combinatorial enumeration of groups, graphs, and chemical compounds by
George Pólya(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1987 and 2012 in English and German and held by 537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In 1937 there appeared a paper that was to have a profound influence on the progress of combinatorial enumeration, both in its theoretical and applied aspects. Entitled Kombinatorische Anzahlbest immungen jUr Gruppen, Graphen und chemische Verbindungen, it was published in Acta Mathematica, Vol. 68, pp. 145 to 254. Its author, George Polya, was already a mathematician of considerable stature, wellknown for outstanding work in many branches of mathematics, particularly analysis. The paper in Question was unusual in that it depended almost entirely on a single theorem the "Hauptsatz" of Section 4 a theorem which gave a method for solving a general type of enumera tion problem. On the face of it, this is not something that one would expect to run to over 100 pages. Yet the range of the applica tions of the theorem and of its ramifications was enormous, as Polya clearly showed. In the various sections of his paper he explored many applications to the enumeration of graphs, principally trees, and of chemical isomers, using his theorem to present a comprehen sive and unified treatment of problems which had previously been solved, if at all, only by ad hoc methods. In the final section he investigated the asymptotic properties of these enumerational results, bringing to bear his formidable insight as an analyst

The Stanford mathematics problem book: with hints and solutions by
George Pólya(
Book
)
28 editions published between 1974 and 2013 in English and held by 481 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume features a complete set of problems, hints, and solutions based on Stanford University's wellknown competitive examination in mathematics. It offers high school and college students an excellent mathematics workbook of rigorous problems that will assist in developing and cultivating their logic and probability skills. These 20 sets of intriguing problems test originality and insight rather than routine competence. They involve theorizing and verifying mathematical facts; examining the results of general statements; discovering that highly plausible conjectures can be incorrect; solving sequences of subproblems to reveal theory construction; and recognizing "red herrings," in which obvious relationships among the data prove irrelevant to solutions. Hints for each problem appear in a separate section, and a final section features solutions that outline the appropriate procedures. Ideal for teachers seeking challenging practice math problems for their gifted students, this book will also help students prepare for mathematics, science, and engineering programs. Mathematics buffs of all ages will also find it a source of captivating challenges
