Main-channel slopes of selected streams in Iowa for estimation of flood-frequency discharges by David A Eash( Book )

2 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 220 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report describes a statewide study conducted to develop main-channel slope (MCS) curves for 138 selected streams in Iowa with drainage areas greater than 100 square miles. MCS values determined from the curves can be used in regression equations for estimating floodfrequency discharges. Multivariable regression equations previously developed for two of the three hydrologic regions defined for Iowa require the measurement of MCS. Main-channel slope is a difficult measurement to obtain for large streams using 1:24,000-scale topographic maps. The curves developed in this report provide a simplified method for determining MCS values for sites located along large streams in Iowa within hydrologic Regions 2 and 3

Flood of June 15-17, 1998, Nishnabotna and East Nishnabotna Rivers, southwest Iowa by Edward E Fischer( Book )

2 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 93 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Record flooding occurred June 15-17, 1998, in the Nishnabotna and East Nishnabotna River basins following severe thunderstorm activity over southwest Iowa. More than 8 inches of rain fell over a large part of Cass County. The rain gage at Atlantic, Iowa recorded a 24-hour total rainfall of 13.18 inches, which established a new official State record for the greatest amount of rainfall in a 24-hour period. The peak discharge was 41,400 cubic feet per second in the East Nishnabotna River near Atlantic, 60,500 cubic feet per second in the East Nishnabotna River at Red Oak, and 65,100 cubic feet per second in the Nishnabotna River above Hamburg. The peak discharge at Atlantic was greater than the theoretical 200-year flood and the peak discharges at Red Oak and Hamburg were greater than the respective theoretical 500-year floods. Information about the basin, the rain storms, the flooding, and a profile of high water marks at selected intervals along the Nishnabotna and East Nishnabotna Rivers are presented in this report
Progress report on maintenance and operations personnel by National Research Council (U.S.)( Book )

2 editions published between 1998 and 2000 in English and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Circular is a progress report showing maintenance and operations personnel job titles, the monthly salaries of highway personnel for 1997, and policies affecting maintenance personnel as of July 1997. The report is the 51st in a series which began in 1944. As with last year's report, the year 1977 is used as the base year for the comparison of salaries. For comparative purposes, portions of this report have been broken down into four regions as follows: North Atlantic States; Southeastern States; Mississippi Valley States; and Western States. The monthly salary statistics for this report indicate changes in long-term (1977-1997) and short-term (1996-1997) percentages. The salary increases from 1996 to 1997 ranged from 0.9 to 10.7 percent. Due to the wide variety of policies listed by the various states, no attempt has been made to synthesize them into a generic policy. The responses to policy questions are simply summarized
Transverse cracking of asphalt pavements( Book )

3 editions published between 1981 and 1982 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report summarizes the analysis of transverse cracking in asphalt pavement by a five state study team from Iowa, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, and Oklahoma. The study was initiated under the sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration and four evaluation conferences were held during the course of the study. Each state conducted a crack inventory on their asphalt pavement. An effort was made to correlate this inventory with numerous factors that were considered to be pertinent to the cracking problem. One state did indicate that there was a correlation between transverse cracking severity and the subsurface geology. The other states were unable to identify any significant factors as being the primary contributors. The analysis of the problem was divided into, (1) mix design, (2) maintenance, and (3) 3R rehabilitation. Many potential factors to be considered were identified under each of these three study divisions
Value engineering study of highway shoulder maintenance( Book )

2 editions published in 1977 in English and held by 80 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This report summarizes the results of a cooperative Value Engineering Study of shoulder maintenance undertaken by the State Highway Agencies of Arizona, Idaho, Iowa and West Virginia under sponsorship of the Federal Highway Administration. The study was limited to unpaved shoulders. Implementation of the recommendations in the four study States would result in a total estimated improved service value in excess of $1,000,000 annually. Cost of the study was $100,000. Specific recommendations varied among the States according to local conditions. Among the recommendations are the use of larger trucks for hauling, use of side-discharge shoulder spreaders, modifications to the standard motor grader, and spot paving of shoulders in high maintenance locations. The coordination meetings attended by study participants at intervals during the project yielded significant benefits beyond their immediate function of maintaining unity among the four State investigations. These sessions provided many chances for the team members to observe and discuss equipment and methods being used by others. Useful information was exchanged in several other highway operational areas besides shoulder maintenance
