"Through analysis of the lives and theories of the three major exponents of humanism, Allport, Maslow, and Murray, the authors have marshaled some compelling arguments for an alternative to the extreme behaviorism of Skinner and the logical positivism of Freud. Hardiness : turning stressful circumstances into resilient growth by Salvatore R Maddi( )

11 editions published between 2012 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 504 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These are turbulent times in which it becomes increasingly important to survive and thrive despite stressful circumstances. Hardiness is the pattern of attitudes and skills that provides the courage and strategies that helps people be resilient by turning potential disasters into growth opportunities and fulfillment, thereby enhancing their performance, sense of fulfillment, and health. Hardiness as the pathway to resilience under stress has become of considerable interest, it is beginning to have an influence on the emerging emphasis of positive psychology by expanding this approach beyond mere happiness, to the courage and strategies needed to make the most of difficult times. The book starts with the special value of hardiness in being resilient by not only surviving, but also thriving under stress, and thereby achieving fulfillment in living. The book then elaborates on the pattern of attitudes and skills of hardiness that form the pathway to this needed resiliency. It discusses the 30 years of validational research and practice that is available concerning hardiness. The book offers various applications of hardiness assessment and training that can contribute to a better life. These include, among others, how hardiness can be trained in school and emphasized in psychotherapy, how hardiness facilitates the intimacy and longevity of relationships, and what organizations need in order to perform successfully in these turbulent times. The book is of interest to academics, industrial and organizational psychologists, clinical psychologists, mental health professionals, and professionals in public health, social work, sociology and human resources

Alienation Attitudes and Exploratory Behavior by Salvatore R Maddi( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

In order to give the psychological conception of alienation greater cogency relative to the influence of sociological alienation, research is needed that ties alienation attitudes to individual personal behavior. It was hypothesized that the stronger the alienation attitudes of people, the weaker will be their exploratory behavior. Thus, alienation attitudes (vegetativeness, nihilism, powerlessness, and adventurousness) are maladaptive because they interfere with simple curiosity about unfamiliar environments. To test this hypothesis, subjects were observed while waiting in an unfamiliar room furnished as an office; they then completed a questionnaire yielding measures of alienation attitudes. Analysis of the data showed that alienation attitudes inhibited exploration of the room, even after intelligence, neuroticism, age, sex, and extraversion-introversion were controlled. Findings suggest that alienation attitudes appear to represent a human handicap, since exploration is necessary not only for development but also for survival. (Author/CS)

Personality as a Resource in Stress Resistance: The Hardy Type by Salvatore R Maddi( Book )

1 edition published in 1980 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The notion that life stresses and personality have an interactive role in illness is part of the wisdom of the ages. Most past research has studied either life stresses or personality. A model for understanding health/illness status is presented that includes stressful life events and the resistance resources of personality, social supports, coping, constitutional strengths and health practices. Emphasized as a resistance resource is the hardy personality type, which is comprised of the dispositions of commitment (the tendency to be involved rather than alienated), control (the tendency to be influential rather than powerless), and challenge (the tendency to view change as a normal impetus to growth rather than a threat). Recommendations are made concerning the measurement of stressful life events, and the prospective treatment of longitudinal data. (Author)
