Paul Creston, a well known American composer, met Toscanini at the rehearsal of one of his works that maestro decided to perform, and he remembers enjoying these rehearsals much more than the performance itself witnessing Toscanini's gift to make music even more beautiful. He recalls an episode when maestro called him to question a note which, according to the structure of music, in his opinion should have been D natural and not D sharp, and Creston agreed. At home, he dug out the original pencil copy and indeed it was D natural. Toscanini was the only conductor to notice this error that somehow crept in and stayed in the score. Socially, Creston found maestro "simple, adorable, modest and understanding." As to his exceptional talent, Creston thinks it was an uncanny sense of and an insight into composers' original thoughts and ideas.
