Seascape gardening : from New England to the Carolinas by Anne Moyer Halpin( Book )

In this lushly illustrated how-to book, veteran gardener Halpin (Homescaping; etc.), herself a seaside gardener on Long Island, delves into the difficulties, pleasures and practicalities of gardening by the sea. She presents an overview of the geology and geography of the Atlantic coast from Maine to South Carolina and discusses the elemental challenges of seaside gardening<U+2014>wind, salt, flooding, sand and sun. Suggestions for ways to work with or overcome these conditions include finding and sheltering an appropriate garden site, using native plants, creating windbreaks and improving the often poor seaside soils. Halpin presents "profiles" of 11 gorgeous seaside gardens varying in locale, from rocky southern Maine to marshy Maryland, and structure, some with formal and difficult-to-maintain plantings, others using native plants for low maintenance, with intriguing comments from the gardens' designers and caretakers about their failures, successes and passion for oceanside gardening. These gardens are mostly designed by landscape architects and professionally maintained, and may intimidate the DIY seaside gardener, but the book brims with practical information and lists of plants appropriate to particular situations. Almost half of the volume is devoted to an illustrated encyclopedia of seaside-compatible species, addressing hardiness, tolerance and recommended varieties
The psychology of friendship by Anne Moyer Halpin( Book )

11 editions published between 2016 and 2017 in English and held by 142 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The meteoric rise of countless social media platforms and mobile applications in the 21st century has illuminated the profound place that friendship and connection have in all of our lives; and yet, very few scholarly volumes have focused on this unique and important bond during the new era of relating to one another. Exploring such topics as friendship and social media, friendship with current and past romantic partners, co-workers, mentors and even pets, editors Mahzad Hojjat and Anne Moyer lead an expert group of global contributors as they each explore how friendship factors within our lives today. What does it mean to be a friend? What roles do friendships play in our own development? How do we befriend those across the race, ethnicity, gender, and orientation spectrums? What happens when a friendship turns sour? What is the effect of friendship--good and bad--on our mental health? Providing a much needed update to the fiend of interpersonal relations, The Psychology of Friendship serves as a field guide for readers as they learn to shed traditional defintions of friendship in favor of contemporary contexts and connections. --Dust jacket
