Chopin's musical style by
Gerald Abraham(
Book
)
64 editions published between 1939 and 1980 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,072 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The legacy which Chopin left to the world constitutes something unique in the literature of music--unique not only in its scope, but in its extraordinary variety and its range of colour and feeling. In the great corpus of his compositions for the piano (he wrote nothing of significance for any other medium) he expressed thoughts and feelings that had not previously found expression in music and on all he wrote he left the clear mark of his own personality. In this book Gerald Abraham has analysed the factors and circumstances which go to make up Chopin's musical style; he demonstrates clearly the past models on which Chopin built and traces the growth and development of his highly individual keyboard forms

Studies in Russian music; critical essays on the most important of Rimsky-Korsakov's operas, Borodin's Prince Igor, Dargomizhky's
Stone guest, etc., with chapters on Glinka, Mussorgsky, Balakirev and Tchaikovsky by
Gerald Abraham(
Book
)
26 editions published between 1935 and 1970 in English and held by 866 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Although this is a book of separate essays, it is, I hope, given a certain unity by the fact that each chapter deals with some product or aspect of the "classical" period of Russian music: the music of Glinka and, more particularly, that written in the half-century following his death. I have almost ignored Mussorgsky and Tchaikovsky, preferring to concentrate on the less discussed members of the "mighty handful," above all on Rimsky-Korsakov who has hitherto been unaccountably neglected by non-Russian critics. But in these studies of some of Korsakov's operas I have concerned myself only with certain aspects of them -- perhaps too exclusively -- in the attempt to investigate the working of the composer's musical mind. - Preface
