by Daniel Alexander Payne
(
Book
)
29 editions published between 1891 and 2001 in English and held by 802 libraries worldwide A comprehensive history of the first hundred years of the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Church which details the genesis of the Bethel Churches in Baltimore and Philadelphia, including the poor treatment of blacks in white churches that ultimately led to the formation of separate denominations for the races and the spread of the A.M.E. Church to New York, westward to California and north to Canada. Also the Church's activities in Haiti and Santo Domingo, missionaries situations--their hopes as well as the obstacles they faced and the question of missions to Africa are addressed. Other topics include religious observance (such as the keeping of the Sabbath as well as the matter of divorce) and political significance (such as slavery and abolition), Bishop Morris Brown, and music in the Church. Drawn from manuscripts, church records, journals, pamphlets, minutes of Conferences, and letters, including many by Richard Allen, Payne's History of the African Methodist Episcopal Church is a comprehensive resource for readers interested in A.M.E. church history and African American history.

Book
)
55 editions published between 1817 and 2001 in English and held by 145 libraries worldwide Published in 1817, The Doctrines and Discipline of the African Methodist Episcopal Church was the first of its kind published by the A.M.E. Church. It is a small but definitive guide to the beliefs, history and practices of the early Church. It begins with a history of the denomination and then presents the "Articles of Religion," which include Church doctrine, theology, sacraments, ceremonies, and church government. Following the "Doctrine" is an extended catechism. The rest of the document is concerned with practical matters of denominational organization, gives guidelines for conferences, specifies the qualifications and duties of preachers and officers, and advises about how teaching, public worship and church music should be practiced. Advice and warnings about difficult situations are offered. Sacramental services are laid out and the volume concludes with "Temporal Economy, " providing guidelines for preachers' salaries, fundraising, home missions, the Book Concern and dealing with slaveholders.
