Having survived the hazards of the great English waterway - plus the outrageous behaviour of that dog - in their debut novel, THREE MEN IN A BOAT, we re-join our heroes George, Harris and Jerome on a bicycle tour through the Black Forest. What is a bummel, you may ask? It is a journey, long or short, without an end; the only thing regulating it being the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started ... As the trio encounters misadventures involving transport, the weather, and the usually tranquil locals, chaos and mayhem again reign supreme
The idle thoughts of an idle fellow, a book for an idle holiday by Jerome K Jerome( Book )

288 editions published between 1880 and 2016 in 10 languages and held by 1,084 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Unsurpassed as a work of literary and comic genius, Jerome K Jerome's Idle Thoughts is a wonderful set of essays detailing the author's view on a variety of topics, from babies and being hard up to cats and dogs, furnished apartments and being in love, as this extract shows: 'Questions of taste were soon decided in those days. When a twelfth-century youth fell in love he did not take three paces backward, gaze into her eyes, and tell her she was too beautiful to live. He said he would step outside and see about it. And if, when he got out, he met a man and broke his head - the other man's head, I mean - then that proved that his - the first fellow's - girl was a pretty girl. But if the other fellow broke his head - not his own, you know, but the other fellow's - the other fellow to the second fellow, that is, because of course the other fellow would only be the other fellow to him, not the first fellow who - well, if he broke his head, then his girl - not the other fellow's, but the fellow who was the - Look here, if A broke B's head, then A's girl was a pretty girl; but if B broke A's head, then A's girl wasn't a pretty girl, but B's girl was. That was their method of conducting art criticism. Nowadays we light a pipe and let the girls fight it out among themselves'
Three men in a boat : to say nothing of the dog! & Three men on the bummel by Jerome K Jerome( Book )

29 editions published between 1957 and 2013 in English and held by 639 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Three Men in a Boat describes a comic expedition up the Thames to Oxford, depicted with irresistibly genial humour by 'J'. As the fashionable late-1880s steam-launches of river swells encounter the hired skiffs of city clerks, J̀' presents a medley of social vignettes, farcical incidents, descriptions of river fashions, and reflections on the river's history. His gently skewed vision of a world in which things continually turn out rather differently than expected is continued in Three Men on the Bummel. The now middle-aged friends embark on a cycling tour in the Black Forest, and the new bicycling craze affords Jerome the opportunity for a light-hearted scrutiny of German social customs at a time of increasing preoccupation with a country he loved. This double-volume edition places two of the most popular works in English literature in the light of Jerome's varied career, illuminating their social context and enduring appeal."--BOOK JACKET

Stage-land : curious habits and customs of its inhabitants by Jerome K Jerome( Book )

74 editions published between 1889 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 416 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his dedication page to Stage-Land (published in 1889), Jerome K. Jerome writes: "To that highly respectable but unnecessarily retiring individual of whom we hear so much but see so little, the earnest student of the drama, this (comparatively) truthful little book is lovingly dedicated." He then proceeds to humorously, and often with scathing precision, examine those characters who inhabit the world of the stage, namely, such hilarious stereotypes as the Hero, the Comic Lovers, the Irishman, the Lawyer and most famously, and the Villain, who " always wears patent leather boots."
Diary of a pilgrimage : and six essays by Jerome K Jerome( Book )

80 editions published between 1891 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 279 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The passion play at Oberammergau is unique, and to many people a journey to see it would be something of a pilgrimage. Such a journey is the subject of this comic novel, very much in the style of Jerome's big success, Three Men in a Boat. The journey is made by rail, and the humour is on such subjects as the obscurity of railway timetables." -- geocities.com

Told after supper by Jerome K Jerome( Book )

40 editions published between 1891 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Told After Supper (1891) is a collection of short ghost stories written by the English writer Jerome K. Jerome. The collection's "introductory" starts as follows: "It was Christmas Eve. I begin this way because it is the proper, orthodox, respectable way to begin [...] The experienced reader knows it was Christmas Eve, without my telling him. It always is Christmas Eve, in a ghost story." Hence, all the short stories included here happen on Christmas Eve and their events are marked with the presence of supernatural elements. Being all told by a first-person narrator, the stories are entitled "How the Stories Came to be Told," Teddy Biffles' story," "The Doctor's story," "Mr. Coombe's Story," "My Uncle's Story," "A Personal Explanation," and "My Own Story." Jerome mingles the fantastic with humor and even tells jokes about ghosts to mix the feeling of fear with laughter. He classifies these nightly visitors into "middle-class ghosts," "young ghosts," "conscientious ghosts," "average British ghosts," and "lady specters" who are "contradictory and snappish, and liable to burst into tears." They all hold their annual feast on Christmas Eve, their "great gala night."
