Two 1:40-scale hydraulic models were used to study the outlet works for Lost Creek Dam. One model reproduced a portion of forebay, the selective withdrawal intake tower, regulating outlet valve section, tunnel, chute, energy dissipator, penstock intake and curve, powerhouse, and a section of downstream channel. The other model reproduced the tower bypass system. The intake tower, tunnel and penstock intakes, and penstock curve were satisfactory with all operating conditions observed. The transition from the tunnel to the chute was not adequate with the highest discharges, and wave suppressors were added to the walls to create satisfactory flow conditions in the chute. The original energy dissipator, a shallow hydraulic jump stilling basin, was not adequate and was replaced with a 30-degree, 50-ft-radium flip bucket because a minimum amount of rock excavation was desired. The tower bypass system was satisfactory with the design condition of 2,100 cfs and minimum pool elev 1826 but not satisfactory with a design flow of 1,050 cfs and minimum pool elev 1789. Only flows less than 700 cfs could be passed with pool elev 1789 without possible vortex problems. (Author)

The Bass Location, Willamette River, is located between river miles 137 and 135, just southeast of Corvallis, Oregon. This area is subject to severe bank erosion during the high-water months of each year. The model study was conducted to look at the alternative of using stone groins as a method of bank protection instead of blanket stone revetment. This method was favored due to studies indicating that stone groins provide a more favorable habitat for river micro-organisms and fish than does blanket revetment. The model, built to a horizontal scale of 1 to 100 and a vertical scale of 1 to 50, had both a movable bed and bank line. The study considered two conditions: (a) Installation of eight groins in the right bank below the Bass Phase I revetment. (b) Installation of the groins plus closing of the right channel at river mile 136.7. Results of the study indicate that: (a) Installation of the eight groins below the Bass Phase I revetment will greatly reduce the erosion of the bank line and cause no significant increase of velocities in the channel; (b) Installation of the groins plus closing of the right channel at river mile 136.7 will reduce the erosion of the right bank, but not to the extent that groins without the right channel closure would. Velocities on the bank opposite the groins increased enough to cause concern for erosion of the left bank

Every year, a persistent shoaling problem exists between the Rogue River jetties, along the inside of the south jetty, and in the truning basin and harbor access channel. This condition makes maintenance dredging difficult and blocks navigation channels, thus restricting vessel traffic between the ocean and port facilities. Rapid summertime shoaling occurs (when riverflows aware normally low) during peak boating and salmon fishing seasons, causing unpredictable and hazardous entrance conditions. Authorized channel dimensions cannot be maintained by dredging due to the rapid shoaling rate. A hydraulic model investigation was conducted by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) to: Study shoaling, wave, current, and riverflow conditions in the lower reaches of the Rogue River for existing conditions and proposed improvements. Develop remedial plans for the lleviation of undesirable conditions as found necessary. Determine if design modification to the proposed plans could be made cost effective

The Applegate Dam project, located in southwestern Oregon, provides flood control storage and includes facilities for upstream fish migration and temperature control of normal project releases. This report presents the results of hydraulic model studies used in the final design of the project spillway and flood control outlet. Tests with the spillway model indicated that the originally designed approach channel invert could be raised 20 feet and still maintain satisfactory spillway operation. The reduction in approach-channel depth resulted in a considerable decrease in excavation costs. The model was used to evaluate the performance of the spillway plunge pool. Initial operation of the outlet model revealed the existence of an unacceptable roostertail emanating from the nose of the splitter wall separating the two outlet entrances. The model was used to develop a pier modification which reduced the roostertail to acceptable limits. The report also presents test results used in evaluating performance of the outlet works stilling basin which consists of a unique, dual-chamber hydraulic-jump basin stilling basin which consists of a unique, dual-chamber hydraulic-jump basin which also functions as an entrance pool for the fish passage facility
