Das Schicksal eines türkischen Mädchens, das als Gastarbeiterin nach Deutschland kommt und hier in einen Strudel von Problemen und Schwierigkeiten gerät, schilderte Helma Sanders-Brahms in ihrer Fernsehspiel-Produktion von 1975. Die Fakten trug sie in mehreren Jahren zusammen. Sie lernte die Situation der ausländischen Frauen und Mädchen in Kölner Heimen kennen und hörte auch das türkische Märchen "Ferhad und Shirin", das sie inspirierte. "Ferhad und Shirin" ist die in der Türkei sehr bekannte Geschichte eines Mannes, der sich mit bloßen Händen durch einen eisernen Berg durcharbeiten muß, um zu seiner Geliebten Shirin zu gelangen. Die Filmautorin benutzte die Figuren dieser Parabel für ihren Film. Die Handlung beginnt damit, daß Shirins Vater , ein armer Bauer aus Anatolien, seine Tochter eines Tages mit einem Gutsverwalter verheiraten möchte. Shririn indes liebt Mahmud, dem sie als Kind versprochen wurde und der jetzt in Deutschland arbeitet. Sie läßt sich in Istanbul als Gastarbeiterin anwerben und geht in die Bundesrepublik, wo sie allerdings mit den vielfältigen Problemen nicht fertig wird. Als "Film über die Einsamkeit in Deutschland" charakterisierte Helma Sanders-Brahms diesen Stoff: "Es ist ein Film über dieses Land, über eine junge Türkin. Ich nehme Partei für diese Fremde, mit der ich als Frau viel gemeinsam habe. In ihrer Suche nach Kommunikation in der Isolation unserer Städte begegnen sich unsere Erfahrungen."
