Adjustment and financing in the developing world : the role of the International Monetary Fund by Tony Killick( Book )

10 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 474 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The accelerated inflation and large payments imbalances that have plagued the world economy in recent years have created new challenges for economic policy. Institutions such as the Internatrional Monetary Fund have found themesleves operating in a global environment markedly different from that for which they were originally designed, and developing countries have found their aspirations threatened by large increases in their payments deficits. There have been wide disagreements about the most suitable policy responses by developing countries to these problems and about the appropriateness of ther stabilization programs favored by the Fund. During the 1970s the growth in international commercial bank lending to some developing countries served a purpose in recycling the surpluses of the members of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)-but at the cost of a growing external debt, and there are signs that debt problems may intensify during the next few years

The role of the International Monetary Fund as a central institution of the international monetary system has taken on new dimensions in the past few years. The traditional business of the Fund as a financial institution has been to help the authorities in member countries adjust to variations in trade and payments flows that generate temporary imbalances. The debt problem of developing countries has created a new element by injecting private participants in the financial system as prime movers. The papers in this volume cover these topics

Developing countries must now use monetary policy as part of their adjustment programmes but its targets, the techniques, and the theory were developed for advanced countries. Low income countries do no have the sophisticated financial sectors that rich ones can assume, and the shocks and size of adjustments which they face may be much greater. Using six country studies, with special analysis of the roles of the external sector and the informal financial sector, this book analyses the interaction between monetary policy, the financial sector, and development

European development cooperation and the poor by Aidan Cox( Book )

6 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Annotation What are the poverty reduction goals and aims of the European development cooperation agencies? This book examines the credibility of their actual record in implementing these goals in the 1990s; their commitment, the role they played, their identification of the poor and how they allocated funds and planned their country programmes. Field studies in seven poor countries estimate the impact of the projects and programmes on poor people. It reveals their good and bad practices in participation, empowerment, sensitivity to gender and targeting of specific poor groups. Despite positive achievements in access of the poor to resources, livelihoods, knowledge and empowerment, it reveals much scope for the agencies to make a bigger impact. Better understanding of poverty, pro-poor policies and more dialogue are needed. New thinking on how to widen impact and deepen partnership is reviewed and proposals are made for changes in agency management and personnel incentives to improve performance
The adaptive economy : adjustment policies in small, low-income countries by Tony Killick( Book )

9 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is an informal textbook on the principles of adjustment policy with special reference to small, low-income countries. It starts from the promise that all economies need to adapt constantly to changing circumstances if they are to achieve reasonable rates of development. In this respect, adjustment is now viewed simply as a phenomenon of the late twentieth century nor a preliminary step in the struggle for economic development
