The formation of the economic thought of Karl Marx, 1843 to Capital by Ernest Mandel( Book )

78 editions published between 1967 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 1,191 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, Mandel discusses the development of Marx's economic ideas from their beginnings to the completion of the Grundrisse. He combines a historical retrospective and a review of current discussions on each of the subjects and problems central to Marxist economy theory. He traces the development of the concept of "alienation" in Marx, and its fate in the hands of succeeding generations, down to the present discussion in East and West Europe, summarizes the fascinating debates over the "Asiatic mode of production," and discusses labor theory of value, the problem of periodic crises, the theory of wages and the polarization of wealth and poverty, and the problem of progressive "disalienation" through the building of socialist society. The author provides summaries of the viewpoints of the many participants in these discussions, copious references to the literature about the origins of Marxism as well as to recent and current discussions, and a firm and clear presentation of his own views on each issue. -- from back cover
From class society to Communism : an introduction to Marxism by Ernest Mandel( )

41 editions published between 1975 and 2007 in 4 languages and held by 1,165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An introduction to Marxist economic theory by Ernest Mandel( Book )

86 editions published between 1964 and 2006 in 5 languages and held by 810 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written at a time of capitalist economic expansion in the mid-1960s, this book pinpoints trends that have continued to gather force, haunting the private profit system worldwide. Those trends include the concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer hands, periodic economic crises caused by overproduction, the tendency of the average rate of profit to fall, and the worldwide growth of the working class
Capital : a critique of political economy by Karl Marx( Book )

13 editions published between 1990 and 2004 in English and held by 772 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the Publisher: Das Kapital, Karl Marx's masterwork, is the book that above all others formed the twentieth century. From Kapital sprung the economic and political systems that in our time dominated half the earth and for half a century kept the world on the brink of war. Even today, one billion Chinese remain in the power of the Marxist system. Yet this important and powerful work has been passed over by many readers frustrated by Marx's difficult style and his preoccupation with nineteenth-century events of little relevance to today's reader. Now Serge Levitsky presents a new revised version of this masterpiece, carefully retranslated for the modern reader and abridged to emphasize the political and philosophical core of Marx's work, while trimming away much that is now unimportant. Here then is a fresh and highly readable version of a work whose ideas have influenced the lives of nearly every person alive today

From Stalinism to Eurocommunism : the bitter fruits of "socialism in one country" by Ernest Mandel( Book )

40 editions published between 1977 and 2016 in 6 languages and held by 652 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ernest Mandel's new book is a study of Eurocommunism unlike any other. Written in the polemical tradition of Trotsky, its sweep extends well beyond the immediate prospects of the Communist Parties of Western Europe. Mandel traces the long historical process which has transformed the once embattled detachments of the Third International into the constitutionalist formations of "historic compromise" and "union of the people" today. He then goes on to argue that the national roads to socialism of contemporary Eurocommunism are the "bitter fruits of socialism in one country" in the USSR. Mandel's book contains trenchant and documented criticisms of the ideas of Santiago Carrillo in Spain, the economic policies of the PCI in Italy, and the PCF's theories of the State in France. But it also sets these Western developments in the context of European politics as a whole--discussing the Russian response to Carrillo, the organizational attitudes of the CPSU to the Western parties, and the emergence of major dissident currents in Eastern Germany sympathetic to Eurocommunism. "From Stalinism to Eurocommunism" represents the first systematic and comprehensive critique from the Marxist Left of the new strategy of Western Communism. It can be read as a barometer of the storms ahead in the European labour movement. -- Back cover

The Marxist theory of alienation; three essays by Ernest Mandel( Book )

19 editions published between 1970 and 1979 in English and held by 418 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Is alienation, or estrangement from one's fellow human beings, an innate and inevitable condition of human existence? The authors of this book say no. They explain that alienation is rooted in the development of class society itself, in the alienation of labor under all systems of private property from slavery to capitalism, where the products of the hands and minds of the vast majority are taken from them and controlled by the propertied class. Mandel and Novack argue that alienation can be overcome through the revolutionary fight for a society both free of domination by the capitalist class, and with complete democratic control of the government and economy by working people" -- Back cover

The meaning of the Second World War by Ernest Mandel( Book )

15 editions published between 1986 and 2014 in English and Japanese and held by 320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The very scale of the 1939-45 war has often tempted historians to study particular campaigns at the expense of the wider panorama. In this readable and richly detailed history of the conflict, the Belgian scholar Ernest Mandel (author of the acclaimed Late Capitalism) outlines his view that the war was in fact a combination of several distinct struggles and a battle between rival imperialisms for world hegemony. In concise chapters, Mandel examines the role played by technology, science, logistics, weapons and propaganda. Throughout, he weaves a consideration of the military strategy of the opposing states into his analytical narrative of the war and its results
