The years between the World War II and the Independence were tumultuous and were years of chaos for Singapore. Singapore was ravaged by the Japanese occupation and then experienced the merger with Malaysia, and separation from Malaysia (1965). Amidst the uncertainties, Singapore survived and thrived through the able and far-sighted leadership of Lee Kuan Yew. Lee led Singapore to Independence and was sworn in as Singapore's first Prime Minister on 5 June, 1959. He retired in 1990. Under his guidance, Singapore became a financial and industrial powerhouse, despite a lack of abundant natural resources. Today, Singapore is a top business city in the world. It has excellent infrastructure such as a modern airport, deep sea harbours, up to date communication facilities, sound financial system, and a stable environment. Most important of all, a well educated and competitive work force

"Visit San Francisco, Paris, Berlin, Florence, Venice, Amsterdam or London, and you'll find a thriving arts and/or performance scene in the cities' streets and underground stations. They are frequently a significant tourist attraction. Hong Kong though seems to throw every obstacle it can in the way of people who want to work as street performers"--RTHK web site

A documentary produced by Radio Television Hong Kong (RTHK) which provides insights into Mr. Lee Kuan Yew's life, personality, family values and his philosophy of government. In part I of the documentary, Lee recounts his personal experience growing up as a 19 year old boy under the Japanese Occupation and tells how through a stroke of luck, he missed the lorry ride that sent young Chinese boys to the beach to be shot. "You may not have noticed, but trade unions are not particularly strong in Hong Kong. That, and the lack of a reliable social security safety net means it tends to be an employers market more than an employees market. In many companies, the concept of an eight or nine-hour working day is a dream. Many employees spend too much of their lives at work. But allowing staff to better balance work and private life can pay off for employers too."--RTHK web site
