The effects of nonlinearity in regression models by
Norman Richard Draper(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 9 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In a previous paper (Draper and Shaw, 1973), the authors provided a way of assessing nonlinearity in nonlinear estimation problems with n observations and p parameters via a function F bar(p, np, 1alpha). This function measured the average deviation from linearity around the usual linearized (1alpha) F bar(p, np, aalpha) as a function of F(p, np,1alpha), and demonstrate that the coefficients convey, in an intuitively sensible manner, information about the nonlinearity of the model. Measures of lack of fit, and transformation of predictors, in composite designs by
George E. P Box(
Book
)
5 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The central composite designs are investigated in terms of their ability to detect lack of fit and it is shown that measures of nonquadraticity can be obtained in all the k major directions. The geometrical interpretation of this is explained. The relationship of these lack of fit measures to the estimation of power transformations in the predictor variables is also explored. (Author)

Two simultaneous measurement procedures : a Bayesian approach by
Norman Richard Draper(
Book
)
7 editions published in 1974 in English and Undetermined and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Thompson (J.A.S.A., 58, 1963) discussed a specific type of problem in which two (or more) instruments are used simultaneously to measure a response. Each item to be measured can be used only once, so that replicate observations are impossible on any instrument, and thus the variance of the instrument readings cannot be estimated directly. Also, if instrument biases exist, they are assumed to be constant throughout the range of observation. Here the authors provide a Bayesian analysis of the twoobserver problem and illustrate it with data given by Simon (1946) on thirty fuses used in projectile firings. (Author)

The value of prior information by
Norman Richard Draper(
Book
)
5 editions published between 1967 and 1968 in English and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Sample y1,y2 ..., yn of observations from some specified parent distribution, together with some prior information on one or more parameters of interest of the distribution. Then by applying Bayes theorem we can obtain the overall distribution (or the marginal distribution) if nuisance parameters are involved of parameters of interest, and can make inferences about these parameters. A natural question to ask is how inferences might be affected by a change in the prior distribution, i.e. by the availability of more, or less, information on the parameters. It would be convenient to have a quantity which could be used to indicate the value of more or less prior information. It is suggested, in this paper, for the one parameter case, the use of the ratio the expected values of the posterior variance of the parameter, expectation being taken over the future distribution of the sampling statistics which occur in the posterior variance. We illustrate the use of this ratio for a number of wellknown distributions. (Author)
