The early modern painter-etcher by Arthur Ross Gallery( Book )

4 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 417 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"For half a century after its introduction in Europe, printmaking remained the province of a specially trained group of professionals. What changed this situation was the invention of etching, which allowed for designs to be drawn directly onto a plate. Any competent draftsman could try his hand at this; many did, and as a result, we now have a wide-ranging corpus of major Renaissance and Baroque graphics made by artists who, though famous as painters, were novices in the print medium." "Featuring essays by Michael Cole, Larry Silver, Susan Dackerman, Graham Larkin, and Madeleine Viljoen, The Early Modern Painter-Etcher spans three centuries, from the time of Durer to that of Goya, and looks at works executed by some seventy painters for whom printmaking was primarily an experimental field."--Jacket
Speaking a new classicism : American architecture now by Helen Searing( Book )

15 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 414 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Until very recently, American universities were led mainly by their faculties, which viewed intellectual production and pedagogy as the core missions of higher education. Today, as Benjamin Ginsberg warns in this eye-opening, controversial book, "deanlets"--administrators and staffers often without serious academic backgrounds or experience--are setting the educational agenda. The Fall of the Faculty examines the fallout of rampant administrative blight that now plagues the nation's universities. In the past decade, universities have added layers of administrators and staffers to their payrolls every year even while laying off full-time faculty in increasing numbers--ostensibly because of budget cuts. Many of the newly minted--and non-academic--administrators are career managers who downplay the importance of teaching and research, as evidenced by their tireless advocacy for a banal "life skills" curriculum. Consequently, students are denied a more enriching educational experience--one defined by intellectual rigor. Ginsberg also reveals how the legitimate grievances of minority groups and liberal activists, which were traditionally championed by faculty members, have, in the hands of administrators, been reduced to chess pieces in a game of power politics. As troubling as this trend has become, there are ways to reverse it. The Fall of the Faculty outlines how we can revamp the system so that real educators can regain their voice in curriculum policy

Käthe Kollwitz and the women of war : femininity, identity, and art in Germany during World Wars I and II by Käthe Kollwitz( Book )

4 editions published in 2016 in English and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The art of German printmaker and sculptor Kathe Kollwitz (1867-1945) is famously empathetic; Kollwitz imbued her prints, drawings, and sculpture with eloquent and often painful commentary on the human condition, especially the horrors of war. This insightful book, the first English-language catalogue on Kollwitz in more than two decades, offers the singular opportunity to examine her work against the tumultuous backdrop of World Wars I and II. The societal cost of war became an enduring subject for Kollwitz after her youngest son died on the battlefield in Flanders in 1914. She dedicated much of the remainder of her career to creating images that questioned the efficacy of war, exposed its devastation, and promoted peace. The essays discuss the motifs she developed in this pursuit-young widows, grieving parents alongside maternal figures that serve as defenders, guardians, activists, and mourners-within the context of German visual culture from 1914 to 1945. Exhibition: Davis Museum at Wellesley College, Wellesley, MA (16.09-20.12.2015) / Smith College Museum of Art, Northampton, MA (29.01-29.05.2016)
