The response of advanced composite laminated plates under projectile impact has been studied extensively in recent years, but because of the presence of a large number of fracture modes and of the complex response of the constituent materials to the extremely high strain rate, the process has not been completely understood. Although the penetration event occurs in a matter of only several microseconds, the constitutive properties of the constituent materials of the composite under such high strain rates change drastically. The general objective of the current investigation was to evaluate the influence of the laminate characteristics and the impact velocities on the penetration response of these composites. More specific objectives include development of a methodology to characterize and analyze post-penetration fracture surfaces both in macro- and in micro-scale. Earlier work conducted by Altamirano (1991) and Mayer (Fig. 1) demonstrates an empirical relationship between the energy absorption function E and the impact velocity V as: E = CVn (1) where C is a constant depending on the laminate and projectile geometry

The purpose of the conference was to discuss the recent developments in the field of matrix methods of structural analysis and design of aerospace vehicles. The conference was attended by over two hundred invited scientists and engineers from Australia, Belgium, Germany, Netherlands, and United Kingdom, and the United States. The participation of representatives from overseas was a noteworthy highlight of this conference since it permitted a free interchange of ideas and information between scientists and engineers from the United States and allied countries. Therefore this conference may be truly considered to be the First International Conference on the subject of matrix methods in structural mechanics. The thirty-six papers presented were arranged into six sessions under five different themes; General Matrix Methods, Finite Element Properties, Nonlinear Effects, Dynamics, and Applications. The papers cover practically all major aspects of recent research and development work in the field of matrix methods of structural analysis and design

Basic investigations were conducted into the fabrication and assembly of modular 1 in. X 1 in. LED arrays of resolution 128 lines-per-inch. The LED material used was green-emitting gallium phosphide, Various LED configurations were investigated including stitch-bonded and flip-chip, bumped contact structures. A demonstration system was built and delivered to the USAF/FDL; this consisted of a 1 in. x 1 in. array plus associated decode/drive electronics interfaced to a 128 X 128 matrix solid-state TV camera. The electronics provided for the generation of video imagery on an eight level grey scale ratio of 2. In addition, array sections were fabricated confirming the achievement of sunlight visible performance for 128 line-per-inch LED arrays. Longitudinal handling qualities in the landing approach are studied. The T-33 variable stability and variable drag airplane was used in a flight program to evaluate various short period dynamics, phugoid dynamics, drag characteristics and elevator control authority levels. The first phase of the flight program was directed mainly at longitudinal short period dynamics, drag variation with angle of attack and elevator control authority. The second phase of the flight program was directed at phugoid dynamics, short period frequency, elevator control authority and drag characteristics. Drag variations with angle of attack, airspeed and elevator deflection were considered. Pilot ratings and comments are related to the airplane characteristics tests

"Basic experimental parameters associated with using laser speckle correlation fringes to measure in-plane strain have been investigated. Equations and inequalities are derived which provide bounding numbers for many of the physical parameters. The feasibility of employing this technique for obtaining in-plane strain data in a microscopic region is shown. This suggests that it may be applicable for studying strain distributions in the vicinity of either a crack or an interference fit fastener."--Abstract
