The Environmental program for the Mediterranean : preserving a shared heritage and managing a common resource( Book )

6 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 185 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The environmental degradation of the Mediterranean basin is already severe and is worsening by the day in many areas. To bring this degradation to a halt, the Mediterranean countries must find remedies for the underlying causes : harmful economic policies, weak regulatory and administrative systems, and insufficient popular awareness and political resolve. The base for common action is solid. The Mediterranean Action Plan, (begun in 1975), has advanced understanding of the threats to the environment and has provided a forum for common approaches and agreements. Much, however, remains to be done to influence the formulation of economic policies and investment projects. This report, a joint effort by the two Banks, identifies priority areas and defines the broad instruments of intervention for mounting a responsive program of assistance - the Environmental Program for the Mediterranean (EPM). This report concludes the first of the program's three phases. The second phase will identify and prepare investment projects and institution strengthening activities and will define specific policy measures. The third phase will implement these measures, projects and activities
The medina : the restoration & conservation of historic Islamic cities( Book )

4 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in French and English and held by 164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The countries of the southern Mediterranean enjoy a rich cultural heritage, at the heart of which lie the medinas - the historic city centers, often dating back to medieval times. Although their cultural value is now widely recognized they have nevertheless been subject to neglect and decay and as yet no coherent restoration policy is being implemented. This timely volume brings together a team of experienced professionals, including urban planners, architects, economists, and financial experts to address the pressing problem of how to revitalize and restore the medinas in a sustainable way. The first part provides an introduction to the problems and issues involved in restoration. The second part presents examples of different medinas - including Damascus, Cairo, Meknes, Fez, Azzemmour - together with important material on the financing and project management of such initiatives
Industrial investment in Europe : economic theory and measurement by Daniel Weiserbs( Book )

4 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The fifth meeting of the <<European Production Study Group>> (I) was held in Louvain-la-Neuve in September 1984 under the sponsorship of the European Investment Bank. The present volume reports the procee dings of this conference which was devoted to various aspects of industrial investment in Europe. Particular attention was given to empirical contributions. Part one contains those focusing on the determinants of firms' investment. The Group was also concerned by policy implications (part two), by the role and the specific nature of foreign investment (part three) and by theoretical developments which have clear empirical implications such as the problems of the measurement of capital utilisation and rates of return (part four). 1. The study by D. Weiserbs on industrial investment in the six major states of the Community shows marked differences between countries. Ac cording to his results, demand prospects are the main determinant of in vestment growth. Relative price changes have a quantitatively more modest effect while firms' self financing capacity mainly affects short-run deci sions. However, as pointed out by C. Boyd in his comment, the small number of observations imposes strong limitations in the modelling of the dynamic aspects of investment. The following threee studies provide a more deeper analysis for France, Italy and Belgium respectively
