Kids who commit adult crimes : serious criminality by juvenile offenders by R. Barri Flowers( Book )

9 editions published between 2002 and 2012 in English and held by 851 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The increasingly serious nature of juvenile criminal behavior has led to greater efforts to understand the roots, causes, and correlates of juvenile violence and chronic delinquency, as well as develop more effective means of identifying at-risk youth and treating serious and violent juvenile offenders. This book examines the realities and dynamics of serious and violent youth offending and its implications. The book is divided into four parts. Part I explores serious juvenile crime including its magnitude; youth violence; kids, drugs and crime; school crime and violence; youth gangs and criminality; dating violence; and family violence. Part ii examines explanations of juvenile delinquency and criminal behavior, including biological, psychological, and sociological perspectives; and intrafamilial causes and correlates of delinquency. Part iii addresses juvenile crime and the justice system, including the police and juvenile offenders, youths and the juvenile and adult courts, and juvenile offenders in custody and confinement. Part iv examines responses to the problem of serious and violent juvenile offending and its precursors, including federal laws and prevention, intervention, and control strategies. According to reports of the World Health Organization, the prostitution of women and children is increasing dramatically throughout the world. The problem is particularly acute in the lower socioeconomic sectors of the population, including teen runaways, drug addicts, and victims of abuse. This survey focuses first on defining prostitution and then on the motivations of those who became prostitutes. In Part II the overall scope of the problem is examined, along with the various subcultures (e.g., street walkers and call girls) and the prevalence of drugs, crime and victimization. Part III covers teenage prostitution and the issues of child sexual abuse. Part IV details other dimensions of the sex trade industry, such as pornography, male prostitutes, customers, laws, and the effects of decriminalization and legalization. Female prostitution outside the United States is discussed in Part V

Sex crimes, predators, perpetrators, prostitutes, and victims : an examination of sexual criminality and victimization by R. Barri Flowers( Book )

7 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 264 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Sex Crimes, Predators, Perpetrators, Prostitutes, and Victims offers a comprehensive criminological and sociological examination of sexual criminality in America. It joins a growing body of research that, in recent years, has focused on the study of sex crimes and their dynamics apart from general crimes. However, unlike most such literature that often explores specific types of predatory sex-related crimes such as incest or rape, or sexual exploitative crimes such as prostitution and child pornography, this book studies the broad range of sex crimes as both a distinct classification of crime and as individual sex offenses. It examines in depth sexual criminality, its nature, characteristics, dimensions, and ramifications in American society. Within this context, the book will address both recognized and little-known sex crimes, the magnitude of such crimes, sex offenders and victims, theories on sexual criminality and sex criminals and the criminal justice system. The purpose of this book is to bridge the gap of existing works on sexual criminality, examine the relevant issues and dimensions of sex crimes, criminals, and victims, and shed new light on the study and implications of sex-related criminal behavior. The intended audience includes the academic and professional community in the disciplines of criminology, sociology, sexology, criminal justice, social science, psychology, psychiatry, penology, medicine, human sciences, child sexual abuse, child welfare, women's studies, and victimology. It is also recommended reading for sex crime survivors and intelligent laypersons with an interest in sexual criminality and its implications for the individual and society."--Jacket

Male crime and deviance : exploring its causes, dynamics, and nature by R. Barri Flowers( Book )

7 editions published in 2003 in English and Undetermined and held by 216 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This textbook analyzes the causes, dynamics, and nature of male crime and aggression. Written for both undergraduate and graduate level students, this textbook takes a multidisciplinary approach to male criminality. The study of crime and criminals has typically either focused specifically on female deviance or has offered a general analysis of crime that presumes, by and large, a male offender. This textbook explicitly analyzes male criminality, rather than implicitly studying it through a general analysis of crime. The relationship between male aggression and masculinity is explored, as is the role of testosterone and other biological factors that may play a role in male crime and violence. The textbook is divided into seven parts. Part 1 examines the biological, psychological, sociological, and cultural and masculinity theories that attempt to explain male aggression, crime, and violence. Part 2 concentrates on the dynamics of male crime and violence. Gender differences in criminal behavior are examined, as well as racial and ethnic differences in male crime. The arrest patterns and the characteristics of male inmates in adult and juvenile correctional facilities are also explored. Part 3 focuses on male crime of violence; chapters are devoted to examinations of homicide, forcible rape, domestic violence, stalking, hate crimes, workplace violence, and terrorism. Part 4 explores property offenses, such as robbery, motor vehicle theft, and carjacking. Part 5 examines male sex offenses and includes analyses of incest, child sexual abuse, prostitution-related crimes, and explores the relationship between pornography and male violence. Part 6 looks at juvenile male crime and delinquency, with a focus on youth gangs and school crime and violence. Part 7 outlines Federal legislation designed to combat criminal and violent behavior, including the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, the Violence Against Women Act of 2000, and the Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act, amended in 1978. The textbook is appropriate for coursework in criminal justice, criminology, sociology, psychology, law enforcement, and other related areas of study
