Cover crops in hillside agriculture : farmer innovation with mucuna by Daniel Buckles( Book )

5 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 76 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Farmers in northern Honduras, excluded from prime coastal land, have been developing a significant innovation in hillside agriculture which enhances productivity while conserving the resource base. They introduce velvetbean (Mucura pruriens) seed between rows of corn, where it continues to grow profusely after harvest. When the velvetbean crop matures some 8 months later, it is slashed and left as surface mulch for the next corn crop. Velvetbean seed then germinates on its own and the cycle is repeated. This book is an interdisciplinary study of the velvetbean/corn system developed, focusing on the wet tropical hillsides of northern Honduras, and applying the tools of agronomy, social anthropology, economics, and historical analysis to various data and aspects of the complex process of technological innovation and adoption in a specific setting. It begins with an introduction on velvetbean use and botany, and continues with an examination of the main features of northern Honduran farming. The next two chapters describe the velvetbean management practices in detail and the agro-ecological processes underlying the high productivity of the velvetbean-corn system, with emphasis on nutrient cycling effects and trends in soil fertility. Chapter 6 discusses the profitability of that system compared to other regional alternatives, and chapter 7 assesses factors influencing the system's adoption, such as land, labour, and economic factors. The conclusion summarizes the main findings and discusses conditions under which the velvetbean experience is relevant to small-scale farmers elsewhere in Mesoamerica
