Galileo by Colin A Ronan( Book )

16 editions published in 1974 in 3 languages and held by 1,202 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Galileo may have had a predilection for the life of an artist, yet he was essentially a man of science. He lived and breathed a new and revolutionary scientific air, and it is not possible to separate the man from his science, to ignore his work and expect to see his character in the round. Nevertheless I have tried, in this book, to keep his science in perspective and yet set him against the backcloth of his age and, above all, to trace the inexorable sequence of events that forced Galileo into his inevitable clash with the Inquisition. To do this I have made use of recent historical research that has shown not only the full extent of his scientific brilliance but, equally significant, has taken a more penetrating look at the background to the trial, the sentence, and Galileo's recantation. - Introduction
The shorter Science and civilisation in China : an abridgement of Joseph Needham's original text by Joseph Needham( Book )

107 editions published between 1970 and 2000 in English and Arabic and held by 1,139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Joseph Needham's Science and Civilisation in China is a monumental piece of scholarship which breaks new ground in presenting to the Western reader a detailed and coherent account of the development of science, technology and medicine in China from the earliest times until the advent of the Jesuits and the beginnings of modern science in the late seventeenth century. It is a vast work, necessarily more suited to the scholar and research worker than the general reader. This paperback version, abridged and re-written by Colin Ronan, makes this extremely important study accessible to a wider public. The present book covers the material treated in volumes I and II of Dr Needham's original work. The reader is introduced to the country of China, its history, geography and language, and an account is given of how scientific knowledge travelled between China and Europe. The major part of the book is then devoted to the history of scientific thought in China itself. Beginning with ancient times, it describes the milieu in which arose the schools of the Confucians, Taoists, Mohists, Logicians and Legalists. We are thus brought on to the fundamental ideas which dominated scientific thinking in the Chinese Middle Ages, to the doctrines of the Two Forces (Yin and Yang) and the Five Elements (wu hsing), to the impact of the sceptical tradition and Buddhist and Neo-Confucian thought.--Publisher description

The Universe explained : the Earth-dweller's guide to the mysteries of space by Colin A Ronan( Book )

For as long as humans have looked upward to the heavens we have wondered at the majesty of the universe, for there, displayed night after night in a dazzling light show, is the celestial kingdom of which we are a part. Our wonder and awe has led us stargazers to be inquisitive and inventive, to explore the wider world beyond our rocky, watery planet. The Universe Explained not only celebrates these explorations but also brings their findings and conclusions within our understanding. Superbly drawn art and brilliant photographs show how the cosmos is investigated, what it contains, and how it works. With a unique and lively format, The Universe Explained uses examples familiar to our everyday lives to explain the exotic aspects of the universe: a string of streetlights is used to demonstrate the brightness of stars, the noise of a motorcycle helps to reveal how our universe is expanding. While each of the book's double-page spreads is a self-contained story, the study of the universe is, by its very nature, complex. To deal with this, The Universe Explained incorporates a unique cross-referencing system, one that takes readers both within a particular section and among the other four. This system also makes the book fully interactive and forges the links of understanding between the different areas of astronomy. Readers of all ages drawn to the science of the universe will find this book the perfect companion, for here wonders and mysteries are magnificently revealed on every page
