'We live in a society where almost every person and institution has closely guarded secrets. What kind of moral issues do these raise for individuals and for society? Under what circumstances is it wrong to pry into secrets? Are there times when a promise of secrecy must be broken? What about journalists' protection of sources, government suppression of information, covert police activity, scientific secrecy? [In this book, the author] investigates these and other questions as they arise in family life, with friends, at work, in public affairs and in special circumstances like the confessional or psychotherapy."--Page 4 of cover

Ethics teaching in higher education by Daniel Callahan( Book )

11 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 1,040 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A concern for the ethical instruction and formation of students has always been a part of American higher education. Yet that concern has by no means been uniform or free from controversy. The centrality of moral philosophy in the undergraduate curriculum during the mid-19th Century gave way later during that era to the first signs of increasing specialization of the disciplines. By the middle of the 20th Century, instruction in ethics had, by and large, become confined almost exclusively to departments of philosophy and religion. Efforts to introduce ethics teaching in the professional schools and elsewhere in the university often met with indifference or outright hostility. The past decade has seen a remarkable resurgence of the interest in the teaching of ethics, at both the undergraduate and the professional school levels. Beginning in 1977, The Hastings Center, with the support of the Rockefeller Brothers Fund and the Carnegie Corporation of New York, undertook a system atic study of the state of the teaching of ethics in American higher education

Common values by Sissela Bok( Book )

20 editions published between 1995 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 783 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In Common Values, Sissela Bok asks what moral values, if any, might be capable of being shared across national, ethnic, religious, and other boundaries, under what circumstances, and with what qualifications." "Bok argues that certain basic values can be shared cross-culturally without infringing on the richness of diversity and can provide a starting point for dialogue, negotiation, and cooperation. She takes a stand against the claim that respect for cultural diversity and respect for common values are mutually exclusive or somehow diminish one another. Examining different moral and religious traditions, she singles out certain fundamental values as having had to be worked out in even the most primitive human communities for purposes of group thriving and survival." "Drawing on a great deal of historical material, Bok also includes in her examination consideration of the 1993 United Nations World Conference on Human Rights; the World Parliament of Religions; the publication of Veritatis Splendor, Pope John Paul II's proclamation on morality; and the International Commission of Global Governance. Combining moral theory with practical ethics, demonstrating how moral values apply to all facets of life, Bok's eloquent defense of shared morality addresses a crucial topic of our time."--Jacket

An American dilemma : the Negro problem and modern democracy by Gunnar Myrdal( Book )

14 editions published between 1994 and 2017 in English and held by 336 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In this landmark effort to understand African American people in the New World, Gunnar Myrdal provides deep insight into the contradictions of American democracy as well as a study of a people within a people. The title of the book, An American Dilemma, refers to the moral contradiction of a nation torn between allegiance to its highest ideals and awareness of the base realities of racial discrimination. The touchstone of this classic is the jarring discrepancy between the American creed of respect for the inalienable rights to freedom, justice, and opportunity for all and the pervasive violations of the dignity of blacks. The appendices are a gold mine of information, theory, and methodology. Indeed, two of the appendices were issued as a separate work given their importance for systematic theory in social research. The new introduction by Sissela Bok offers a remarkably intimate yet rigorously objective appraisal of Myrdal--a social scientist who wanted to see himself as an analytic intellectual, yet had an unbending desire to bring about change. An American Dilemma is testimonial to the man as well as the ideas he espoused. When it first appeared An American Dilemma was called "the most penetrating and important book on contemporary American civilization" by Robert S. Lynd; "One of the best political commentaries on American life that has ever been written" in The American Political Science Review; and a book with "a novelty and a courage seldom found in American discussions either of our total society or of the part which the Negro plays in it" in The American Sociological Review. It is a foundation work for all those concerned with the history and current status of race relations in the United States."--Provided by publisher
American denial( Visual )

2 editions published between 2014 and 2015 in English and held by 122 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In 1938, Swedish researcher and Nobel Laureate Gunnar Myrdal plunges into America's Jim Crow South. His resulting study, An American dilemma (1944), poses a profoundly unsettling question: How can a people devoted to the American creed of equality, justice and opportunity for all continue to erect obstacles to those ends based on race? Through Myrdal's story and contemporary racial dynamics, the film explores how denial, cognitive dissonance, and implicit bias persist and shape all of our lives"--From container
