Central Asian security : the new international context by Roy Allison( )

8 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 1,826 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The authors in this study assess internal security policy problems and examine the security content of evolving relations between the Central Asian states and regional and international powers - specifically the stakes, interests, and policies of Russia, China, Iran, Turkey, and the United States. While new possibilities for regional security cooperation in Central Asia can be explored, there remains a danger of destabilizing rivalry, which would fracture the region and hamper economic development. These dilemmas are examined by a team of specialists from Western Europe, the United States, Russia, and China."--Jacket

The origins of the Cultural Revolution by Roderick MacFarquhar( Book )

27 editions published between 1974 and 1997 in English and held by 1,394 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the final volume in a trilogy that examines the politics, personalities, economics, culture, and international relations of China from the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s. It seeks to answer the central question: Why did Chairman Mao Zedong launch the Cultural Revolution (1966--76), which plunged China into chaos and almost destroyed its Communist Party? The Coming of the Cataclysm starts with the great famine of the early 1960s, which resulted in tens of millions of deaths and set in train a series of emergency measures that increasingly divided Mao from his comrades-in-arms. His anger that they were prepared to adopt "capitalist" methods to rescue the country was sharpened by his belief that Moscow had actually gone capitalist and sold out to the "imperialist" West. From 1961 to 1966, the period covered by this volume, the increasingly urgent question for Mao was how to prevent a similar revolutionary degeneration in China. The Cultural Revolution was his answer.Drawing upon new evidence from Party documents, personal interviews, books, and journals, MacFarquhar details the growing rift between Mao and his colleagues as they attempted to cope with domestic privation and an increasingly hostile international environment -- until the Chairman finally decided to smash the unity of the Yan'an Round Table by unleashing society against the party-state

The emergence of modern Turkey by Bernard Lewis( Book )

29 editions published between 1961 and 1979 in English and held by 908 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The subject of this book is the emergence of a new Turkey from the decline and collapse of the Ottoman Empire. Although there have been many books on the Turkish revolution, this is the first in which the development of modern Turkey is examined in detail over a period of two centuries, and with extensive use of Turkish as well as Western sources. In this new edition, the author has made a number of corrections and additions, and has revised the presentation of several topics to take account of new evidence and new research."--Back cover
Hard diplomacy and soft coercion : Russia's influence abroad by James Sherr( )

9 editions published between 2013 and 2014 in English and held by 901 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

During the Cold War, Soviet influence and Leninist ideology were inseparable. But the collapse of both systems threw Russian influence into limbo. In this book, James Sherr draws on his in-depth study of the country over many years to explain and analyse thefactors that have brought Russian influence back into play. Today, Tsarist, Soviet and contemporary approaches combine in creative and discordant ways. The result is a policy based on a mixture of strategy, improvisation and habit. The novelty of this policy and its apparent successes pose possible dangers for Russia's neighbours, the West and Russia itself. -- Provided by publisher
Obstacles to change in Latin America by London Conference on Obstacles to Change in Latin America( Book )

13 editions published between 1965 and 1970 in English and held by 898 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A collection of essays by leading Latin Americans who, apart from being academically distinguished, are placed near the sources of political power in their respective countries and have on occasion advised either their governments or international organizations on specialized problems. Although the authors work in different disciplines and start from different sets of premises, these essays reflect a remarkable coincidence of views which may be described as a civilized impatience with the attempt to use foreign models to interpret Latin American situations. Latin America has a pre-industrial urban civilization that has remained largely untouched by the changes traditionally associated with industrialization
